auto start mig welding

we are looking into automating a process to mig weld ends onto a 25mm o/d, 20mm i/d mild steel bar. What equipment do I need to consider, standard kit or is there a special version that allows the gear to fire on command, not by proximity to the surface?

What else should I consider?

Welcome to the forum. I've built a few automatic welding machines so have an idea what you're trying to do, a few questions,
Are you doing a rotary or linear weld?
What sort of positioner are you using?
What type of welder, has it got a Euroconnector?
There are simple/cheap solutions for your process depending how much you want to spend.
You also have to consider safety depending on who's going to operate the equipment.
