Hi all,
I’m a self taught (through posts here and youtube etc) MIG hobby welder for restoring and maintaining my old VW cars. I’ve put together a reasonable setup and am at the point where I can fabricate and butt weld in patches to an ok standard when something occurred to me. So, when welding in mild steel patches in areas that are then enclosed by the patch (say in an outer sill) I can’t paint and rustproof the inner side on the material which over time will then allow the piece to rust out from the inside. The burning question is then, can I weld in stainless steel patches with a stainless filler wire (say 316 or 309) which will then not be as critical to rustproof from the inside? Thanks again in advance for any insight into this notion.
