AUSTRALIA welding tickets

hello my name is brendan and im am a 2nd yr plumber. im 17 years old.
i have a MIG, TIG/stick welders. i am under going a 2nd couse at tafe doing welding for my own benifit and for an open career.
my dad (also a plumber) did exacely what i want to get into. the company he work for did a bit of welding, metal fab and plumbing. (he work there since his apprenticeship to they close the doors) (38yrs)

ok enough of of that.

to my questions....

what are all the AUS welding tickets? IE qualified to weld pressure vessiles in tig only. what are the numbers ect.
would be great if someone could help me out

Hmmmm ask the company it would be an ASME of some shape or form, but most companys will have threre own inspectors and test you through the door, so to speek, also to say pressure vessiles in TIG is well, like saying I want to drive something on the road, depending on the pressures and substance the codeing no,s will be diffrent, the size will also count as will position of welding, although and Runnach will know better than me above 12" is classed as flat plate 1G?....

Find out all the info, before thinking about doing your codeings.

Honestly your need to know sizes, materials etc, and working pressures codeings are very specific..When I looked into makeing loco boilers I ended up geting advice dirrect from our insitute of welding, They would be your best bet and there must be an aussie equivelent........and btw a codeing only covers you to make vessals to an approved plan, you cant just start knocking stuff up as youve a codeing to your name..

Its a big ol subject and without know the exacts of what you wish to do I cant really help any further.

ok thanks for that info. i was just reading on jobs sighs i found welding to code 7. i did a bit of serching and found that vwas tig welding pressure vesels. it might be different here in aus then the uk?

yep sounds like it ASME is based around AWS, here its ASME to BS, XXXX, As I say Runnach tutors, so He might well know, Id try the australian equivalant of the TWI and ask them, here there very helpfull.

Hi Brendan.

It's worth knowing that most jobs which advertise for coded welders don't actually mean that. What they mean, is welders capable of welding to a code. If you applied for a job, the first thing they'd do is give you a test to see if you could do it (once they'd had a peep at your c.v.). If you passed that, they'd put you in for the coding required.

So you don't need a coding to get the job, but you do have to know what you're doing!

And once coded, the papers don't belong to you. What you do though is get a photocopy, to demonstrate to future employers that you have been previously coded.

so these tafe couses that say you will get qualifed to weld to standard just mean you will have the understanding of what to do?

yep as I sort of said a through the door test would be the norm, Id defently go down the root (pardon the pun) of finding out what code 7 is, In the uk we have whats know as The insitute of welding, they can tell you the ins and out of an exact procidure, codeing, process etc etc... in aus Im sure there must be an equivelent, failing that Email the US, AWS they can proberbly help..

Codeings are not a straight forward thing because its mostly about the "insurability" of the work rather than an across the board standard

BTW you could try www.ukwelder.com not a Australian forum, but a good few guys on there have worked in pipe over there.... be warned you may be shot down in flames, but someone will proberbly come up trumps.

Code 7 relates to tig process, code 4 relates to mma pipe welding, tis an Ozzie way of numbering the various processes. ASME, AWS, DNV, EN ect codes of practice to achieving a coded standard remain!
