Couldn’t believe this ,I pulled onto the forecourt,got out of the camper and was beaten to it by a pump attendant! He was at least 70 aswell.
This was Welford,near the m1/a14 junction,south Leicestershire.
Last time was approximately 20/22 years ago.

I know and use that station occasionally. Last time I went in it was absolutely lashing down with horizontal rain that chap was out with the pump ready before I had got out of the van!
Fair play to him he was absolutely soaked!

Few places in the USA where you aren't allowed, by law, to fill your own car petrol tank.

Last place it happened to me was in Switzerland somewhere up a mountain pass, pulled into a big Q8 station with the Caterham . . . eventually took the hose from the guy and did it myself - it requires a certain technique to avoid having to pay for more fuel on the floor than in the tank.

London, late 90's, the Shell garage at the roundabout south of Chelsea bridge. They tried attendant service (briefly) but it didn't really work unless you were prepared to wait five minutes while one of the disaffected youth finished chatting to his mates and wandered over - usually as you were just putting the nozzle back on the pump. Very different from the service you used to get on French/Spansh motorways where they seemed to treat it like a F1 pitstop!

I used to be a pump attendant from 14 -20ish as a part time job during school/college! Was 20yrs ago at a place called Jonsted garage on the a616 between Brockholes and Honley. Was a brilliant job, I met some amazing people and definitely played a big part of my formative years! I'd happily go back to being 15 and do it all over again!!

That would be Cliff known him all my life, lovely old boy, he worked there as an attendant in the 50s as a boy apparently and he’s back there now… Stanford hall by any chance?

Our local filling station is attended, it’ll be a shame when the place eventually closes down or modernises. Not many MOT centres still working exclusively out of a pit and stocking parts for cars from 60 years ago, they even have all the gear to make the old style number plates.

Nearest village to me, the only petrol station is attended service by the old boy who owns it.
I should say 'was', as it's been shut every time I've passed it for last six months, so I suspect he's either hung up his nozzle for good or just got fed up with it.

I am 56 - and apart from one village garage that was attended. Everywhere else since I got a moped aged 16 - has been self service.

New Asda forecourt is unstaffed and you can only use a bank card to get fuel from there.

I can’t remember the last time an attendant filled my tank, must be decades ago.

My dad had a part time job as a forecourt attendant in the late 60's early 70's, he would do the evening shift so my mum would send me round with some sandwiches for his tea. I remember there was a choice of 2, 3, 4 or 5 star (no diesel) and the dispensers for 2 stroke oil and Redex.

On our last trip to Crete (2019) attended service, with windscreen wash happened in Serbia and also in mainland Greece and Crete itself.

Think there was a fair bit of legislation to get to self service. I remember being a bit amazed at the time.....'you mean fill it yourself?' Prior that ...you did NOT touch the pumps!

I remember big old land yachts that had the filler cap behind the license plate.
You swung it down, opened the cap, and had to lay the nozzle sideways.
