As far as I'm aware there is no link between ASME and AWS at all, are they wanting you to provide your own certs
i done the 6G asme 9 test which was carbon steel pipe on a 45 degree angle, stick route with stick hotpass with flux core wire fill and cap. once i passed i was then told if i paid £100 i would also get the EN 287 cert which i found confusing as i thought the asme9 was the dogs ******** then im gettin told some employers as for 287 or asme 9. also on my certificate it refers to AWD 1.1 which wen i look up on the net it says tht is aws? my course was £2700 you would think for that kind of money they would let u no what you wer getting.

Iv'e seen blokes 20 years in the game and will always be tackers .
Then like me loads of codes 20 years ago worked on BNFl work etc.
codes run out and now I would struggle to put in a good root .
you have to stay on top of the game and get your codes endorsed or else they will be just pieces of paper.

I think sometimes there is too much emphasis put on 'Codings' on this forum by people who see them as some sort of mythical qualification which gives them membership to some sort of elite welders club.
To answer your question, it could be as little as 1 hour, 1 day, 1 week. You could get 'coded' for doing a single run fillet on a T in the flat position. But what benefit would be that to you unless you had a job welding that exact joint for a specific company.
To have a coding is just a demonstration that he welder has successfully welded a plate, pipe etc to a qualified welded procedure and the weld test was witnessed by a person designated by the insurance company who are issuing he qualification and the welded joint was tested to meet the criteria set out for that standard (Asme 9, 287-1 etc)
If your a new welder looking for a job, then obviously there would be some merit in having a coding as your showing your potential employer a insight that you can weld a specific joint to a specific standard, so in that instance you'd be best off going for a Tig root, MMA fill and cap in a Pipe in the 6G position as this is more demanding. But it wouldn't be much relevance if the job your going for is Alu Mig welding of truck bodies.
I know some welders who have codings in mig welding, but they only ever weld 1 or 2 joints in the same thickness, from the same material day in day out. The welding looks 10/10. But if you moved the wire feed speed or voltage marginally they wouldn't have a clue how to re-set up the machine or if the joint changed from steel to stainless steel they would be back to square 1, but they are still 'coded'.

we have a 20 year old in work, never held a welding torch in his life, didn't even know there was more than one type of welding. gave him a stick welder and a quick demo, he tried, did it first time no problems. same with mig, and after an hour he could tig ally together with a nice good strong joint.
have welders that have worked there 20 odd years and can only weld certain joints with certain welders.
its a talent that some have more than others, some are naturals, some just flat out cant do it.
