I worked for a company that supplied complete rotating equipment packages for the oil & gas industry, each with an equally mind bending control system. My boss was bricking it that New Year’s Eve and had all the regional managers and lead technicians on standby in case things went pear shaped. Quite how quickly we could have reprogrammed the PLC’s or replaced the dodgy bits in a refinery in the backside of Iran or a gas plant Mozambique always mystified me, but I wasn’t complaining about the payment he agreed to give for for calling our global offices for a report of any customer issues as the New Year got underway made a great start to my Y2K.
