Artificially Ageing Galvanising

I've had a search (with an "s" and a "z" ) but can't find the thread on here. There was I'm sure, something about artificially ageing galvanising. I don't want to take the zinc off just dull it down a little from bright and shiny. In this case some builder's band.

Vinegar rings a bell...

Mordant solution or T wash? It's used prior to painting.

As above, T wash.
Apply with a squirty bottle if you want a more random, unven colour.
Below job was fresh galve T washed.

I do not know if it makes any difference, but builders band is not galvanised. It is flash zinc plated, to a much thinner coating depth than true galvanising.

It would be wise to test on an offcut first and expect that the time the chemical stays on the material before rinsing would be considerably reduced.

T wash still works on zinc plated stuff. As above spray bottle, work from the bottom up to avoid run marks. Apply when the metal is warm for a darker / quicker reaction. Make sure its clean too, any oils will prevent it reacting.
