Artificial Grass

Any experts in preparing ground for Artificial Grass. Do you need to pin it down?
It's a 4 X 5 metre piece of 34mm tall grass but I have seen some references that you can't use sand on top if you have dogs due to the smell?

Keep finding conflicting information on the net about this type of grass.

There's loads of different grades but when I did mine I dug it back and levelled it and then:

Weed fabric
Type 1
Thin sharp sand layer
weed fabric
Underlay
Astro turf

Would do the same again, was lovely to walk on but a bit hot in the sun. Still got the odd weed that came through over the years.

My son went on what was available.....most were quoting 3 week delivery.

One of my neighbours sons has a turf and garden service, I think they have some sort of wooded hidden border to pin the turf to, Also quite a lot of sand brushed into the turf to stabilise it and make the turf blades stand up, I know on big jobs, school playing field etc they do an annual Service, sucking all the sand and small rubbish back up, Filtering and sanitising before relaying, He has some great photographs of jobs done on his website,, called Future lawns,https://www.futurelawnsandlandscapes.co.uk/patios

My former business partner had it and said it cost more time and money to maintain than real grass, particularly if the local cats take a liking to it...

The choice of astro will determine if it needs infilling or not, some do and some don't, I never bothered and never had any repercussions from it, i also never needed to pin it but I had the ground work prepped well and it was a fairly thick variety. As for maintenance I just brushed mine, no cost to it at all once done.

If you don't like mowing the lawn just sprinkle it with Whisky. It's half cut in the morning.

We have it, been down three years this summer.

exactly the same as this but we have these curved steel pegs to keep it in place

I also had an outdoor Hoover/blower as it does get a few leaves and bits of the neighbours plants in there

Not with a lightening fast Springer and German Shepherd and a great big May Cat living there. Lol
I am not a fan myself but the two dogs dig more than two navvies on speed

I laid a piece about 8x8 feet with an olive tree in the middle of it. The square was bordered with pavers set on edge in concrete so weren't going anywhere. I added topsoil and levelled using the top edge of the pavers, then set in a frame of about 2x2" treated timber. The 'grass' was then laid over a double layer of weed barrier, tacked to the timbers and tucked in firmly all round. Of course the tree was already there so I had to slit the 'grass' and join it with tape but it was barely visible (I made the join so as viewed from the nearest window, it was hidden by the trunk).
Over time I suppose it would be the buried timber that would disintegrate before the artificial grass. It had to be regularly swept as olive trees shed like bu99ery.
