Artic rear doors

getting ready for the move.......making packing crates etc....
need to know the size of the rear door opening on a BOX type body on a 40footer trailer...

I reckon allow about 7`6" Frank, made some doors for our tipping trailer and they are all much the same width. Two 4` wide doors they are covering the posts.

Keep trying to get on to heavy haul, or something other than general haulage, but there doesn’t seem to be much on offer around here.

No, 66t/m Fassi, and a truly awful crane it was.

Because it’s mounted on a standard length chassis, (which wasn’t really long enough...), they turned it round to make it fit, so the front outriggers are actually behind the crane. Trouble is, there’s about 1” of clearance when you fold the crane away, and because the unit is too short for a crane, the fifth wheel has to be slid as far back as possible so it would couple to the big low loader trailers that they use. Which in turn means that depending which trailer I had, all the weight would be on the drive bogie with hardly any on the steering axle. The first time I noticed it was when I loaded a 50 ton 360 in the yard and tried to turn left out of the gate but went straight on .

It would certainly handle the weight, mind you, it was quite happy lifting a 40’ box with 12 ton in it and the outriggers short rigged. And the unit itself was a beast, ex Norn Iron heavy hauler rated for 150 tons, double drive rear bogie, 450 horse engine and a 16 speed manual transmission, she could handle big loads.

Sadly they didn’t have enough work for the crane, which was the main reason I left, but such is life.

@steviec_lj I suppose it’s all port work and boxes where you are.

The only heavy operators I know of are Somerscales at Immingham, and it’s a while since I was in there. Iirc, didn’t they used to be at Killingholme on the old airfield? They run some serious kit and recently acquired C&C of Scunthorpe. The others are Hansard at Caistor who run a lot of Hiab wagons, and bought the very long reach DAF Hiab wagon that Sharon Pattison’s of Hull ran before Mr Pattison’s brush with the law.

Surprised I didn’t spot that .

And Geoff (GCS himself) Johnson is no spring chicken either. He must be well into his 70’s, but he’s as sharp as a sharp thing. I could leave him for dead with Hiab stuff, but for true heavy haulage, the man really is a legend.
