hi all been discussing with my boss yesterday scince weve gone over to W size bottles there too big to lug around the workshop on the 5 welders we have there he also has about 200ft of 8mm air hose lying around is there any way we can have it to have the bottles outside in a spare little shed thingy and have 5 seperate regulators plumbed in

ive got my large size bottle of couger in a fixed corner of shop and just have 10 meters of air hose pipe with push couplers..whatever i weld i leave bottle there and take pipe to welder with no drop in pressure at all...Remember thou to bleed the hose of air by the bottle gas for a second or two before you weld as you'll be welding with fresh air in the pipe at 1st

It can be done but there is more involved that you think. Have only ever Sean it done in steel pipe. I have seen a flow meter fitted with a bypass valve so you you can make the flow go through the meter so you can check for leaks. It might just be easier to build a gas trolley

We keep our gas bottles outside



Regulated to about 5 bar where it comes into the building before being distributed through copper pipe with a flow regulator at each point of use.

You would have to have the regulator on the bottle in the "shed" or you would be piping gas at 200 bar+ a bit much for air hose.

Had it at a place i worked at for a bit. Think it was steel pipes, Flow meter at each drop, just plug in and off you go. It wasnt from a single cylinder though, it was a bank of them, connected to a manifold with changeover valves etc.



Have your welders not got facility to carry a cylinder? Probably easier to modify the chassis or build suitable trolleys.

What you really need is a manifold system like this, clicky they are quite common in production welding shops, college workshops etc where there are rows of smallish welding bays, if you keep the pressure in the pipework below 2 bar it should be exempt from needing a written scheme of examination under the pressure systems safety regulations.

Good point, we have BOC in each year to test/inspect ours which isn't cheap!

14 bar/L comes to mind for the pressure regs. It would still need inspecting by a competent pension but the site manager can declare them selves competent.

Like wise! But after all they are the duty holder and the ones who have to defend there decision so let them get on with it and run and hide when needed!

seen it done in colleges with copper pipe running at 4 bar

done one for myself and that runs at 4 bar then you have a 2nd reg or flow regulator at the welder, works well.

make the joints good as leacks would be expensive, i solderd everything and there is no pressure drop overnight so thats good enough for me. chose 4 bar as that what te regs for the job are

tell him its illegal and the staff could contract occupational asthma and then tell him he is very likely to be sued or prosecuted should HSE discover what he is doing

Mind you, the painter should have refused too. Being told to do it is no excuse.

Wouldn't it be fun if all the workshop staff failed to turn in after the Christmas break due to respiratory problems.

I have a W bottle chained on the back of my 230TE and it rolls no problem over my concrete floor. A little care is all that's needed, surely easier than plumbing and regulating a pipe network for the sake of 200ft

No probs doing this, although it would be far better if you used copper piping and connected the cylinders to a proper manifold but it is a better option than humping cylinders around the shop, as has been said you wont need to use a higher pressure than 4 bar max

Just make sure you comply with PSSR 2000 regulations
