arc welding thin stainless steel,can you?

Hi,Im new to this forum be gentle! lol ,Im going to be welding in my workshop shed,what power extensions would a need for safety,also Im welding stainless steel 2mm thick, whats the best setting and amps and rods do I use? or can you weld thin stainless together? any help is very much appreciated guys

Yes 2mm stainless can be welded with stick. But it could be a bit tricky as stick is more suited to thicker material, mig or tig would be better.
2mm rods would be my choice but again not easy to use. Grade depends on your material, but 308 rods are probably the most common. Take a look at the welding different steels tutorial.

Are you new to welding or just the forum, might be an idea to have a go at some mild steel with some 6013 rods first try to lay down a few beads on it to see how you get on before spashing out on stainless rods etc im not a fan of welding stainless with stick

I know you can buy stainless steel rods but is the lack of a shielding gas not an issue?

The shielding is given from the flux on the rods just like with mild steel.

And when welding stainless watch out for the slag because when it chills it will pop off by itself so wear saftey glasses.

Thanks for info but what im hearing im going for mig,so im looking out for a second hand one or new one if price is right.cheers for all the help.
