Arc welder for d.c.tig

Hi Everyone,
How do you use a stick welding inverter for tig welding? Mainly concerning getting the arc started, does it strike up as soon as you touch the electrode to the work-piece,and does this damage the electrode point.?
What are lift arc tig welders,how does this work,
Hope for some good answers as I'm going to try next week.

Hi Gordon,
If its a lift arc mac machine you basically touch the lectrode on the workpiece and then lift to create the correct arc length,whereas scratch start you scratch the electrode on the piece to start the arc.

There are many more skilled tiggers on here that can give you better descriptions than me.

Yes, scratch start TIG will contaminate the electrode. I have heard starting on an old motor brush will help.

Lift-Arc and other similar names start at a low voltage/current. So when you contact the work and release, it then goes to the set power level.

Any piece of copper/brass will do.
