Last time I had it my eyes were so glued I had to stick my head in the sink for ten mins and pry them open, when they did open I wished I could stick them closed again!
and No it's from a film called Shallow Hal, BUT it looks like Arc eye....
The easy way to understand it is the sun burn you get from a welders arc on your skin causes it to blister etc, the same happens to the inner eye... the good news is it does pass, best advice if you have it is lay down and relax in a dark room with a damp cloth on your eyes to sooth them, as others have advised.. good luck.

never had arc eye but have had arc skin burn have to say it was probably the second most painful thing i have ever had never again. It was still painful after 2 weeks!!!!!

The whites of your eyes can turn red but really it's the skin over your eye and when you go to bed it feels like your eyelids are lined with 40 grit. You know when you have arc eye or flash as we used to call it.

I've had it a couple of times. Always been when i have been working close to another welder and the nature of the job has meant we couldnt put a screen between us. I think it comes from the reflected light coming through the back of my screen when someone is welding behind me.
I found it comes on late evening, tired itchy eyes, eyes streaming, light hurts them.
Go to bed and wake up early hours, sandy eyes, can't open them, streaming like hell. need dark glasses the next day as even dull light hurts.

I had arc-eye a couple of times years ago, very very painful. One of the main reasons I decided originally to buy an auto darkening mask, welding under cars became so much easier and safer.
I'd willingly buy the most expensive auto mask not to have arc-eye again.

When I was 15 a mate wanted to cut some metal up to make some bits for his motorbike, he had a Halfrauds arc welder[sip] which had come with a carbon arc torch, we burned **** out of the metal without face masks, arc eye is painful;-) A few drops of Amethocain is wonderful. The bloke who had the arc welder clearly didn't learn, a few years on he got arc eye again, cutting out a patch for the floor of his pubic hair.

Ah I remember them, one of my uncles had one when I was a nipper, v4 motor and far cooler than the Gazelle my dad was running at the time.
