Having had a couple of quotes through, I think I’m going to be exploring other options where possible.


This one wants trimming down to around the point where the two limbs come back to meet each other. Plus a few other lower bits to reshape the canopy where possible.


The two mature pines in this image want taking out. The one in the foreground to around 3ft in height, the one buried at the back to ground level.

Cleanup isn’t an issue, we’ll burn anything over 1.5” round. Anything else can be burnt while it’s cut

Prices I’m getting are north of £500, which is probably double what I was looking to spend, but I do understand the need for rigging and climbing equipment, insurance, and it’s a 2 or 3 person job.

Anyone local, in the DN, LN, or HU postcodes able to give a quote?

not that i know prices for cutting trees but considder the hight of the trees and lookiing underneath theres a kids play ground sounds not that bad to me

My eldest starts an arborist course when he finishes school, seems to be pretty well paid at the moment. Like you I'm always surprised how much it costs and there are obviously good reasons for that. We have friend who is early 20s and is doing close £1K a week as a qualified climber. It's young mans game the climbing stuff.

Easily worth £800+ i wouldn't of touched it for less than that

First tree have it felled totally, it will water sprout quickly, become very dense and look terrible fell and replant is always a better option over follards. (not a pollard, not a fell nicely made up word that works)

when I had a hire business I remember a bloke coming round to see if he could hire a chain saw . it was to cut a poplar tree down 3 times the height of his house .it was only12 foot from the building . he had a price of 400 quid to do it. that was 35 years ago . needless to say I said no

If that was to be done on mates rates you would get a climber, two groundsmen, and a truck/chipper for £650 +Vat for the day . Hard to say from here but looks like a days work for just the tree work, you may end up doing some of the clearup yourself if it runs over the day.

Had to have the Poplar tree (98 feet tall) that was at the bottom of our garden removed 2 years ago.

A cheap chipper is 30k, the behind scenes cost are eye watering

When I did garden work, mostly bigger trees than that and not as much room around them. I charged a lot more than that just for one tree. £500 isn’t bad

500 is too cheap, but im not very good at the race to the bottom.

It’s a lot cheaper than i would of charged, so it’s a good price.

On a side note, the kennel and kids bits are coming out while the work is done. No.1 so that there’s a bit more space for them to work in, and No.2 so that nothing gets damaged

I have a 40 foot Birch down the garden which had bifurcated into 5 different trunks and I gradually whittled it down to 1 main trunk over the last few years(I'm now 67). I use the ladder to get into the tree then the harness and anchor in the tree while I cut it and drop the sections on a rope which my wife drags and unties for me to get the next lump tied on, cut off and lowered. Think it through and don't rush and there's no problem. If you are shifting the stuff round the bottom of those trees I would ladder up and tie them as high as possible then cut and drop them onto the lawn there looks plenty of room and they are not thick trunks.
