A young apprentice optometrist recently got careless and got his hand caught in the lens grinder. He wasn't seriously hurt, but he certainly made a spectacle of himself.

The village blacksmith hired an enthusiastic new apprentice willing to work long, hard hours.

He instructed the boy, “When I take the shoe out of the fire, I’ll lay it on the anvil. When I nod my head, you hit it with the hammer.”

The apprentice did exactly as he was told, and now he’s the new village blacksmith.

You can just tell if a 16 year old kid is gonna be any good workwise.

I have had them turn up in tracksuits and trainers. Phone glued to thier hands.

Then every now and then - one rocks up on moped - rucksack on his back with his lunch in it - new pair of workboots/work trousers his Mother has provided.

He removes his crash helmet - puts on a wooley hat because it is winter and cold. Politely nervously introduces himself.

Normally in work trousers with tool belts hanging. Working from home this week and an old bleach stained pair of joggers has been the more comfortable option.

Boots live in the van and only go on when I need em. Working in domestic houses 99% of the time

I am only one of those things.

(Okay, sometimes both, but usually just one.)

I do usually wear Snickers work trousers, they have pockets for knee pads. But a lot of work i do at home which doesn't require kneeling i'm all about the comfortable scumbag look.

I got my apprenticeship in 88.i did my work experince in the local garage and the boss offered me a saturday job, then from that an apprenticeship, not YTS as he told me the wages are crap and instead he would pay my wages.I was on £40 a week not the yts £27.50. He also told me I shouldn't work in the motortrade as it was crap, I should have taken his advice.
My daughters now at the stage of work experience and its been difficult getting anything due to work from home or inurance matters, luckily she got something at the local design shop/printers, less than a couple of minutes up the road so the commute will be easy.Trying to get something in IT but its not esay.

On a serious note I would recommend an Electricity DNO apprenticeship. 2-3 years apprenticeship and then starting wage £35000 per annum. That’s the base wage before overtime. I know 20year olds earning well over that.

That’s very good actually. Far from traditional apprentice wages

Just looked and it’s £15k a year as apprentice. After approx 2 - 3 years to qualify, starting £35k and rising yearly with experience. Overtime / call outs can easily take it to £45k+… that’s for a 21 year old.

At 16 I paid for my own, never once asked my parents for help and had a half day Saturday for cash so it gave me extra spending money for weekends

Funny you should say that - any kid who has rocked up here over the years aged 16 on a moped/scooter has never failed - always done well.

Note to myself: Fast interview technique: "Have you got a moped" "Yes" "The job is yours!"

i had a lad work for me for a year was 22 years old he aplied to leccy board for a job and went on there training course for 6 month . he became a high voltage fitter . there was a few teams and the engineers . they all wanted him to work with them as he was a good all rounder they asked him how he knew so much just been on there course he gained a lot of practical stuff of me and his father inlaw was an inspector for the national inspection council so scored on the theory and inspection and testing . he is now in the offices doing all the paperwork and goes out and has to do the isolation and clearances on the high voltage transformers that have to be worked on by others

I'm off the tools now and drive a laptop for a living, but I use what I've learned since that apprenticeship every day

Fortunately, i did my apprenticeship and first 20 years on the railway. Getting that apprenticship was probably the best move i ever made. They dont do them like that anymore
