Applying Epoxy Primer with spray gun but topcoat with rattle can?

Any reason not to do this? Some time ago, I bought a 100l SGS compressor and a couple of spray guns. One FLG5 with I think a 1.3 tip and one AZ3 HTE2 with a 1.8 tip. The car I was going to try and paint is no longer in my possession so stuff hasn't been used. I never got around to buying the 3 stage filter and mask, so while I won't spray a top coat, is there any reason not to use the compressor to spray on some Epoxy primer and then add the top coat with a rattle can?

Any tips for someone who has never used a compressor and gun before for applying the primer? Just trying to find something suitable...

yeah you can do that - will the compressor air be dry ? might be better off with a can if you're poorly equipped

what sort of project is it , might get some better help if you tell us

It's just a rear quarter for a car, annoyingly a yellow car so God only knows how the match will be...

I'd actually completely forgotten about moisture filtration so a can might be better this time. Glad I asked

My SGS 100l compressor ran flat out when using the FLG gun until it overheated and I had to find the reset button.
This time I bought a LVLP gun with 1.4 and 1.8 needles from spray guns direct.
It was a revelation. I've just sprayed Lechler epoxy primer with it (1.8 needle) with very good results.
Next is Nisocoat 2, a two pack non isocyanate top coat.
The gun and extra needle pack was about £65.

yeah thats one less thing to worry about with cans , if its a semi nice car then consider blending the colour into the door , its not hard and will only add a bit to the costs , otherwise theres almost no chance it will match to an aceptable standard

It's an MR2 and a track car. I think I'll go with cans for now and get the gear together to do it properly at a later date. It's essentially a track car so doesn't need to be mint, just OK.

ok fine , maybe try and keep enough basecoat incase you want to blend it , it might be a terrible match lol

even with the rattle cans i do a spray out card now to see if its anywhere close , used to just lash it on and hope for the best

Nope. That is Isocyanate based. Just go with the epoxy primer and make sure that the compressor is properly drained out first.

plenty of off white /cream epoxy 2k cans on ebay
