Heat and candle wax. Never tried it, but I’ve heard it works, the wax wicks into the bowels of the thread then sort of sets as a solid lubricant.

I’d imagine a decent penetrating oil, not wd40, would work just as well.

Probably better, because you need minimum viscosity.

Theres some interesting expansion and latent heat characteristics to any number of waxes that could be in play.
Worth a further look, I'd reckon...

Having an old Shogun with bolts that like to snap even when heated I was curious if it actually worked and would save me have to drill and tap more broken bolts

Certainly worth experimenting with. Do a side by side test with ATF:Acetone mix.

Given the lack of any crayon on the bolt he extracted, I'd say it was probably more down to the heat than anything else.
Possibly it may have lubricated the end thread to help it out, but most likely same as any penetrating oil would have.

I usually find with enough heat it will come out eventually. Even if ends up as a liquid.
