anyone into there books?

found a couple of old books in a burnt out biulding the other day.

ones called "panel beating and sheet metal work" by sidney pinder, printed 1940.

the other one is called " the practical engineers pocket book and diary" dont know who this one is buy but its from 1909, 600 pages of real interesting bits and bobs, about 60 addverts for steam engines and bits like that.

one particular add stood out and made me smile, its for the "diesel oil engine" at the end of the add it says "inexaustable supply of cheap fuel, in all parts of the world"

anyone have either of these books? or know out about them esp the pocket book one?

Wonder if the 'trades description act' would apply to that claim?

Strange things are old books, I used to dabble in them a bit, some you think worthless can be worth a small fortune and one's you think rare are worth nothing.

The adverts are sometimes the best part, if they are good quality they can be scanned, a cheap frame and make great wall prints.

im thinking the pocket book one would be of interest to a steam engine bod, lots of tech stuff in there about those.

I used to have some prints of early bikes, spark plugs, oil adverts etc on my stall in the early days of car booting and they went like hot cakes, the good thing also was any copyright that did exist was probably long gone or there no one left who was bothered.

Doubt it would work now, PC use and the internet provides easy access to old adverts.

Not familiar with the specific titles mentioned but I regularly pickup old engineering books from local auctions. They are a mine of information, some of which could possibly be unobtainable today.

think your right there tigler, a lot of the old ways have been lost, which is a real shame

ooh think I, 10p, I'll have it.

Reading through it there was a diagram showing the layers of the atmosphere the last layer was described as "theoretical limit of atmosphere"!!

How old is this book? I thinks.

I picked up an interesting old book, for 50p in a charity shop, which makes good reading for anyone repairing vehicle bodywork, as most of us do at one time or another.

It's called 'Rust & Rot and what to do about them', circa 1972, by a guy named R.M.E. Diamant, a lecturer in Chemical Engineering at Salford University. Published by Angus and Robertson, if you want to look it up. (ISBN 0 207 95436 4). Mr Diamant wrote many scientific books, too.

It's a practical book written for people who are likely to put the information in it into practice, not for scientists. It explains in layman terms how rust occurs, all about cathodes and anodes and combinations of metals, coatings, etc.

Because it was written in 1971-72 it gives a good insight into the problems of rust and rot in the cars of that period, many of which had what looked like designed-in rust traps. As somebody who has worked on a number of 'Classics' over the years, I know from personal experience that much of what the author states is absolutely correct.
The book makes an interesting read if you can get hold of it. It's scientific stuff written in ordinary language, which makes it all the more interesting.

I find old engineering books are very sought after , but i still love hunting them down in old second hand book shops and book stalls at markets , old stuff printed by caxton or newnes is excellent, i stumbled across a three volume set called "the complete engineer" and another simply called " sheet metal work" , these are wartime editions and the photos of the work and the factories are amazing and sadly the likes of it will never be seen again.

I agree these old engineering books are brilliant I buy them when I can they are worth keeping hold of . I am slowly reading a 500 page book published by ' The Structural Engineer ' dated 1943. Its got some great detail covering some interesting projects like the highway tunnel under the river Maas in Rotterdam , the budget for it was £1.5M which is very good considering its 1169 yards in length with a cross sectional area of 260 square yards ( they must not have had minimum wage in those days) .

I can read this in the evening whilst pretending I am also watching Coronation Street or whatever other crap happens to be on the TV , that way it keeps everyone happy .
