anyone into electronics repairs tv /radio etc

im looking for some decent advice from a proffesional repair guy

ive got a little cd player here thats got a back lighting led gone on the lcd screen( is it a lcd ? same as most videos with the blue digits ) , ive broken it down as far as i can and would like some help

most importantly...this style of screen , will it be able to have the led replaced

the lighting is contained in the black screen..not the visible led's on the board

some of these displays didnt use an led they used a flat panel that fitted behind the display and they gradually got dimmer as time went on but i cant for the life of me remember what the panels are called did yours get dimmer ?

edit: i think they are called electroluminescent panels and i would imagine thats what you have there, the white part directly under the lcd

How much did it cost? If it's less that £100 don't bother trying to get it repaired, it'll cost more than that for parts and labour even if the bits are available.

i would agree it wouldnt be cheap, you can buy electroluminescent panels of various sizes and even one that you can cut down but at what cost and suitability not sure.
you could always test the board for a suitable voltage then get the appropriate resistor and modify the end of the lcd panel to take a led 2mm or smaller if you can find one maplin do a 2mm

Replace that electrolytic cap at the left side of the panel. There's a chance that may be the cause.

a quick test of the supply to the electroluminescent panel will soon confirm if its the panel or supply, connections at the sides

Indeed, but for the sake of a thirty second swap job, it's not really worth arsing about testing supplies and tracing the circuit. If that cap don't sort it, it ain't really worth phaffing with, I'd say.

well ive got nothing better to do so dont mind tinkering

i cant really suss how its lit...all the digits are still there its just one side had gone dim , so i recon its a led of some sort

the cap is the blue thing? why would it effect one side only?

the blue thing isnt burst..its sticky foam residue where it had a foam surround around the screen

i can have a go at changing it if would cause one side not to light?

If you're determined to repair it? then desolder/unplug the unit and look for the panels code number and look one up on ebay,not sayin you'll find one but its a good source for these displays.

Usually the microcontrollers on the back of these take the knock because the get hottish,looks like a blob of black glue but underneath is the controller

Just change the thing and rule it out, instead of prevaricating and speculating.


p.s: When you're asking advice from people who just might know what they're on about, something like the following:

might not go down too well. Are you planning on telling the local vicar that the book he keeps carrying around with him is called a bible too, just incase he didn't happen to know?

i think the above post was quite uncalled for the op was merely stating from his knowledge what type of backlight was in use and it was in his original post, not contradicting someone

Never said it was contradicting anyone, or suggested it was anywhere other than where it was. Call it being piqued or whatever, or maybe I'm just in a crappy mood today and hence felt like mentioning a point which was let slide yesterday, who knows, but seriously, would you walk into a fab shop and tell a welder that those shiny bits he's welding are metal, or a doctors surgery with a leg problem then try to tell him which part of your body is actually a leg? Nope, hence telling the engineers that the mode indicator LED's aren't the backlight is pretty much stating something they may perchance have already gleaned from their multiple years of experience and training in the field. Just mentioning it for possible future reference is all.

The odds that it is a bad LED are slim,LEDs are usually rated for a life of 250,00 hours.
Make sure the led has power.
It looks like a standard Hitachi HD44780 type display,usually sold for a couple of dollars on ebay as a 1602a.
Don't be put off by the 16 pins vs 14 pins the 15-16 pins are the backlight connectors.
But as I said,it is more likely power to the LED is gone.
