anyone help,need a rd350lc brake drum skimmed

hi, im in York. im in need of a Yamaha rd350lc rear brake drum skimming. the drum is part of the wheel

the pic of the wheel isn't mine. I painted mine and fitted new tyre before I realised drum was oval (ish) any help much appreciated

I'd do it if close but sadly not.
Might help to put up diameter and width of rim as you are going to need someone with a large enough gap bed lathe.

18 inch wheel, that's without tyre, will measure properly when I pop into garage later

What diameter is the drum. Could be done on a mill.

measurements : outside diameter 25in (with tyre on) drum outside diameter 8in so probably 7 to 7 1/2 internal and overall depth of wheel hub is 4in so drum probably no more than 2in deep

I assume the actual friction surface is steel inside the alloy housing. Makes me wonder if the distortion is therefore caused by corrosion between the two parts so skimming would simply hide the problem rather than cure.

Is there actually a machining allowance on the drum? You probably won't get a particularly long life out of the shoes.

How much material do you need to take out? By increasing the diameter of the drum, you will need larger brake shoes, otherwise (as stated earlier) the shoes will wear very quickly. Brand new (standard size) shoes will only have a very small contact area, and will have a very poor braking efficiency. As they wear in, they will get better, but they won't last long.

It may be worth trying to get some thinker linings and riviting them on your self. Can you still buy the friction linings these days? I've not bought any for years!

Check the drum for cracks first, as they had a habit of cracking.

Use the axle and some spacers, with a dog driven off a spoke. that way it will run true to the axis

That's what faceplates are for, or as DR Shox says run it between centres with a dog.

It would be a bit of a ropey wheel if the spindle wasn't concentric! Probably more would need doing than just skimming the drum.

If it's put on a lathe you are probably going to have to remove the tyre and I wouldn't want to garantee the paint if I was clamping it to a faceplate.
