anyone got a user manual for a oxford 180rt arc

im after a manual for the oxford 180 rt. my friend was round yesterday playing with it and he was trying to turn up the amps with out lifting and turning the gage up as you are supposed to do( i hope he has not damaged it) the amp selector seems a bit loose now. how do you get in side these big old machenes? i undone the bolts on top, welder but the lid wont come off. has anyone had one of these apart at all? if so please could you tell me. cheers

undo the big bolts and possible take the handles off. I would expect it to be heavy and rusted in place

you might find that the transformer is mounted on the under side of the lid

This pic of an oxford we have in work shows one of the control levers missing on the right hand side.

It looks like the top nut bit is moulded into the handle with a locking nut under it.

The handle bits probably all unscrew so they could be passed through the casing when the were built.

It might be just a case of tightening the lock nut when you have the lever in the right place.

Or it could be that the lever has parted company with the moulded in "nut" but then the whole handle would come off.


You could try turning the lever with a finger resting on the rod to see if they turn seperately.

As MK says i think everything is attached to the lid

Yes, all the weight is on the lid. I doubt hes damaged anything, unless he was giving it some real physical. Id expect the handle to turn on the shaft beofore it damaged the internals.

Theres not much to look at inside.

When you take it off, it will take a few moments to drain the majority of the oil off, worth having some cardboard on the floor so you dont make a mess.

One you get the bolts out you'll need some lifting gear, we use a forklift, to raise the top plate and transformer vertically, use a couple of lengths of timber across the top of the tank to rest it on and allow it to drain, the oil smells pretty awful, if it gets on your overalls cats will avoid you for days, from memory, the current adjuster spindle has a nut on the bottom which has probably come loose, they are very simple machines it'll be obvious when you see inside it.

hi guys, didnt get time to get the lid off today, good job to after reading replys on this thread. thanks for the advice ill make sure there 2 people when lifting the top off. i dont think nothing has snapped, as hitch says it turns on the spindal abit. maybe ill put some of that oil on the garden to stop the cats from sh*ting in it, ill suppose it wont do the wifes plants any good. cheers

Had a look at the one in work tonight, and the handles do just screw on with a lock nut. The hex bit on the side in the pic is the bit that is moulded into the handle.
