Anyone got a Jeep Cherokee?

I am looking at a jeep cherokee N plate so 95/6 4.oL Limited high output. It's in OK nick but has a flat battery.

Main question if anyone has one is how the hell do you open the bonnet? There's a pull down near the door jamb on drivers side which has a choke symbol on it, as the car has fuel injection I assume the previous owner used what they had rather than a specific bonnet cable. However pulling the cable does nothing. It also looks like there's a bit of rag in the front of the bonnet - could be stuck in the latch.

Anyone have any tips?

Can't help with the bonnet thingy, but examine the floor(s) area very carefully, a mate bought one and later discovered that it was rotten underneath, possibly as a result of doing a lot of off-roading and not being cleaned out properly.

Get someone to press the bonnet down while you try to operate the cable, they are noted for seizing and if it doesn't come up you may have to follow the cable as far as you can and destroy the outer to pull the inner with grips. If it's not your car let someone else sort it for you.

Just so you know, there are two catches, one each side just above the head lamps. I have an M plate and it's been a good truck for the money.

I need a tow car for my track car, thought about fitting a bar on my Audi A8 but the price is 350+VAT I may offload the car in the next 6 months or so (too many electrical problems) so the bar would be dead money.

The Jeep has a towbar and my Mate who is selling it wants £400 for it. Has tax till March, good AT tyres all round, reasonable bodywork, newish exhaust and looks solid underneath. Just need to sort out the battery issue and it should be a goer.

Mine has the latch molded in the kick panel.

Yes, two latches, they can rust and get sticky.

4.0L straight six is a very reliable engine, google it and you will know.

That is probably not the bonnet catch but a means to increase the idle when cold.........Mercedes vans used to have this. I would avoid a Jeep they are thirsty on fuel, crap resale value also!

Hmm, they held value here. Mine gets 22mpg highway (US gallons, something like 26mpg imperial). City is just under 18mpg (21 mpg).

That's with 10mm wider tires (so a bit taller) Flowmaster exhaust and K&N filter.

Mine is a 1990. Came with everything under the hood nice and shiny. That is because they have a habit of leaking oil out rear seal and valve cover. Replaced engine on mine (old sounded like bug diesel with collapsed lifters.) Have about 70k miles on it (odo at 225k.)

Been very reliable. Only real problem was the manual transmission. Found about the "5th gear hub issue" 150 miles from home

Next mood is a 2001+ intake manifold for better low end and maybe another MPG.

Buying for £400 I'm not bothered about resale value. If I get a year out of it then break it for spares or scrap it it's paid for itself.

I can't see anything like that pull cable inside the car, anyone got a pic of it in situ?

That's it, just the other side and replaced with a choke cable. Managed to open it - just needed to pull harder, I didn't want to risk breaking it so one of the lads working for the guy that owns it pulled while I gave the bonnet a bounce to help things along. Catches look OK so I suspect that it was just a case of pullung hard enough on it.

Battery charger is on, just need enough juice in it and to switch the immobiliser off. Keyfob works for lock/unlock although I suspect it needs a new battery. I think the keyfob will work the immobiliser side of things once the battery is charged. Will see later on.

If I remember correctly (had one , and now looking for another) there is the
pull cable under dash on left side and you also need to slide the latch under the hood to one side. It only comes unlatched part way, due to safety while driving in case someone releases it by mistake.
That model stopped being built after 2001. I am currently looking for a 2000 or 2001 in the USA.

The rear axle halfshaft bearings are open and run directly on the shafts, (a common problem,ISTR) if worn you'll need new shafts, and they are not cheap

Just did mine early this year (220k miles). Shafts were fine. There were many different rear axles. The Chrysler 30 one has bearings that run on the shaft. Most years here they used Dana axles (30,35 40, 44).

The manual on mine showed a Dana 30 but it turned out to be the Chrysler one.

If the shafts are worn, you can get offset bearings that ride on a different area of the axle. No big deal.

I didn't buy it in the end because of ludicrous insurance quotes - £1000 for the year. When my insurance renewal for my main car came through 3 months later it transpired an error at Direct line had attributed the burglary of my house and theft of my Touareg in August 2009 as a fault claim against me, the accident the car thieves had the next night was also down as a fault claim against me despite insurance/Police knowing it was stolen. Thus I was showing 2 claims, they had wiped my protected no claims, marked me as high risk AND increased premiums in my postcode because of the increased car crime in our street!

Saw the car on ebay about 8 months later as a non runner with immobiliser issues, so probably a good thing I didn't buy it!

I sold mine a year or two back but IIRC the pull is down on the passengers side by the kick panel under the dash if that makes sense and then you slide your hand under the bonnet just to the right of centre, i think! and there's a lever to push but my memories not what it was LOL.

Good enough machine, mine's was a 2.5td limited with all the toys and not too bad on fuel but it was like a reverse Tardis, looked big on the outside but was quite small with limited headroom inside.
