anyone good on a lathe?

have a snap on impact gun, one of the parts inside is damaged and snap on told me that he cannot get the part that costs £10 for 300 days but if i send my gun to the repair centre i will see it back in 2 weeks for £80.

the part i need is a round aluminium plate with a bearing in the centre, has a small lip around the outside that has worn and coming off. i was hoping some one on here could make me one, i will post the pictures of the part tomorrow as it is currently locked in my tool box

It doesn't sound like its a drama to make providing the lip you describe isn't some odd form that requires specially made tooling. Best to get some pics up as you mentioned. I should be able to do it for you but i am in Kent. There maybe someone closer that offers, i would think that would be preferable for you.

its sat in my tool box for around a month and only just dug it out today, its more complex than i remember, has some gallerys that will need to be cut out

when he put the part number in his computer it said estimated delivery was 300 days, not sure what the hold up is lol

That would be difficult to reproduce with all those channels and slots.

Could probably be TIG welded back together then turned on a lathe to remove the extra filler.

yes that another option if anyone is willing to do this? took the gun apart month ago and it went in the bottom of my box, found out i couldnt get a part so forgot about it, then remembered and made this post

Looks very much like a die casting, if so high chance you wave bye bye to it the moment the Tig torch hits it. Its one of those things where you will only know when you try.

As per shenions reply, its not exactly a small turning job. If those air ways are joined inside that 'casting' then impossible to machine as one part, complex and many, many hours work.

That lip locates and helps to seal the front end of the air motor,i would try reassembly using a fibre washer,or a smear of silcone or liquid type gasket ,also looks like a locating dowel hole ,so hopefully the location is not to critical.Was it broken stripping it down or in use?

If it can't be made will order from us. Was in use, lost power so ripped it apart

Strange ,the airmotor in most tools is a good fit on the dia and normally squeezed to create a seal,eliminating any movement ,as you say in this case ,best to order another....unlucky

As far as repair goes i'm thinking this would be one those jobs where the monkey metal aluminium solder is the way forward... As Scott said probably a die casting and probably cast from old cat food tins or something else nasty. A jubilee clip or something similar would pull it back into shape and act as a mold for running some Al solder in

Order the part & wait 300 days = £10
Have it fixed & still wait 14 days = £80
Differance = £ 70

£30 buys you a MMart driver, should last 300 days, also order the part & wait 300 days @ £10 so total cost = £40 & no waiting + you have a spare tool.

I'd charge £100s to make a 1 off of that part, it's a real PIA job with all those ports.

Although personally I'd be onto Snap-On UK and ask why such a delay ? I'll put money on the part being on the shelf in the US.

Does the gun look a lot like a CP part?
I have several Snap-on air tools and the CP equivalent
and they look identical, apart from the logo.
