I can understand why some people join - there's no where near as many reliable small machine shops about these days, but at the same time they should dig about first. Then, anyone without contacts has to start somewhere.

Are they half shafts or drive shafts ? The splined part is usually thicker than the shaft before the splines are cut so they don't get stress cracks running along the shaft and the splines are induction hardened for similar reasons.
