I'm struggling to seal a basin waste. I must have done dozens of these over the years but this one's really got me.
I've tightened but not overtightened the nut, the rubber seal looks to be making good contract but still there's a weap.
Is there any magic gunk I can slather on the thread or on the mating faces, rubber sealing ring& porcelain?

I've never used any jointing compound of any sort on this type of fitting but there's always a first time & I'm ready to have a go with horse hair if that's what it takes.
Doing my head in, any help gratefully received.

I'm afraid these days I use decent quality clear silicone on all mating faces. it's the only way to get a seal with less than perfect components.

Hair and grease, whatever it's called, failing that.

Is it backing up ?

Have you set the waste fitting into the basin with Plummers Mate? This should seal it so the only way for the water to go is down the centre of the fitting and not the outside. That is unless you overfill the basin and it goes down the overflow in which case it could leak as shown. Have you checked that the overflow slots in the fitting are well above the backnut?

If the sealing rings not doing it then use silicone/ plumbers mate or boss white in place of the ring and bed the grating into that.

Hi TEO you just helped me so here we go. I'm a plumber. PTFE round the thread. Silicone between basin and flange of waste to stop leakage when plug is in.
I use hard Polywashers between back nut and rubber washer /basin
Silicone filling the space where the waste comes through the porcelain.
Polywashers don't distort. Always works for me. Many many years.. Hope that helps

oh and as above a small smear of good sealant ive done a few with out normaly the rubber is quite soft and squshies to make a good seal but nothing like belt and braces

A rubber washer, between the top nut under the sink and the sink itself, won't form a proper seal, as water will leak along the threaded part, as has been found in the original posting. Usually, with a threaded plug hole, the seal between the drain hole and sink needs to be made between the plug hole and the top surface of the sink. How the seal is formed depends on the design of the plug hole part. There might be a sealing washer, or o-ring, or it might be necessary to use something like silicone sealant.

the metal side that you see the rubber washer as well

push through now silicone the pot underside hole make sure you coat the threads push the rubber washer up to seal resilicone the threads before the screw gets screwed up

if you dont the damn thing leaks from the top leaks from the pot and also leaks from the damn threads

Thanks for all the help, seems as though it all boils down to sealant & more sealant. I'm just wondering why none of the others I've done have leaked, last one was a cpl of years ago & I should have heard by now..... This is the sort of thing that's going to keep me awake I'll have to invite myself round & go feeling up behind all the other porcelain.

I had similar stuff done by a so called professional plumber .

It was hidden by a half pedestal and they had bunged a full toilet roll inside the half pedestal case so that I wouldn't find the leak . Three months later I located to stench of rot & dirty water .

They hadn't put the waste pipe through the wall correctly it was going up hill by almost half an inch so when forced to connect to the brass work it unseated it . I had to recut the hole 3/4 of an inch lower and half an inch to the left wrt from the inside wall . Used a simple square & small spirit level to find the right place to put in the correction hole .

I used silicone round the porcelain waste hole , pulled the brass fitting down through the hole , added silicone to the black poly nut and hand tightened it . I added smear of Vaseline to the waste pipe nut thread as well as to the brass fitting outlet thread and gently put them together & hand tightened them .. No leaks at all .

I used injected foam to fill the big hole inside and outside once I had set the waste pipe in the correct clamp, trimming it back 1/2 inch both sides of the wall a fortnight later , then re-rendered the outside and plastered the inside and refitted the half pedestal .

I noticed when doing this remedial work that the sink outlet was slightly wider & showerd a 2.5 mm ring of unglazed at the outlet beyond the brass work , so putting silicone on the brass fitting well and letting it set for half an hour definitely stopped any leaks there . The retainer seat and the soft silicone sesal were well coated ..the sealing ring on both sides . I suspect that the waste pipe not being at the right angle and the sink not being set on vertical plaster in the wall caused the brass flange to not fully seat or even stop leaking after they had used half a cartridge of sealant .

Not if you will be the next person who has to unscrew it.

A professional will consder those who have to come after her.

A small amount of sealant judiciously applied in the appropriate place is the right solution. This is why plumbers mait, which does not set, is the traditional solution.

Quality of gaskets on wastes varies. I alway try to buy McAlpine.

I had one that I could not seal an fitting a Thomas Dudley sorted it first attempt.
