Any plumbers about?

My old fella is fitting a new kitchen. The new sink is shallower than the old one, and the worktop is slightly thicker.

This has contributed to the U bend / waste trap not lining up with the outlet pipe going through the wall.

The there is about a 1 - 2" gap between the bottom of the plug hole / waste fitting on the bottom of the sink and the U bend when it is attached to the outlet pipe.

Is there anything easily available to link the two?

The pipes are 40mm.

I've seen various things in wickes / B&Q such as adjustable waste traps, all in one waste traps / trap height adjusters but not sure which is most likely to work. It will get expensive if he buys loads of things which don't work and he can't take back because they have been opened / fitted etc.

Also are 1.5" the same as 40mm?

You can get trap extensions , fit on the sink to extend the waste, use as many as it takes ! 1.5" is 40mm

Just get a sink waste plug with a longer drop.

The waste outlet from sink has male thread, top of U bend has female thread. The adjuster has a female thread at the top which will (should) connect to the waste outlet but how does the U bend connect to the adjuster?

All this plumbing stuff is a bit odd to me - I mean nothing is level for a start!

the correct way is to fit the trap to the sink, then work out how to connect the waste to the trap.... if it is still aligned then a couple of 135deg street bends ( 45deg single socket) should do the trick

It uses a U bend with a compression type connection.It might be worth using a new U bend,I've found the compression type to be more tolerant of mixing new and old pipework.

135 degree bends sound like they may help.

Fitted lots of new sinks, fit the waste to sink, use a trap that has an adjustable height, then be prepared to cut and adjust existing 40mm waste pipe using solvent weld pipe.
