Any locksmiths here?

My neighbour thought he’d locked himself out of his office room. The lock is a mortise with a latch handle The key attempts to open but comes to a very solid stop about 3/4 of the way back. I took off another Locke to see how it operates and I think a spring has broken up and fallen behind the bolt, stopping it from retracting fully. The house has just been redecorated and the doors are no longer available.

Lock picks don’t work as the lock levers are actually working ok. Any ideas how I might dislodge whatever is behind the bolt. I’ve only got the keyhole to operate in at the moment. I don’t think calling out a locksmith will get him anywhere.

I get all the nice jobs.

Pop the doorstop off. Cut the bolt off with a recip saw.
Fit new lock

I’ve done that with my other neighbours doors where the trim was in plain wood finish and just nailed but this is all beautifully freshly painted so not that option.

That's your option I'm afraid.
Less likely to damage the door than trying to drill out the exact spot.

What's a bit of paint in the grand scheme of things.

I see where you’re coming from. I’m heading towards 75 but I find that many people of younger years don’t seem to have the skill sets to work things out for themselves. You lot see stuff as a challenge and so do I. It also keeps my brain from turning to mush. We’ll bat ideas around on here but you ain’t normal people. And thank goodness for that.

ive gone through both the surround and lock with a 9" grinder

couldnt get inside as no back door key

either break a window to gain access to back of the door and grind it out or just go through the door frame and lock

it really is pick your punishment or cost

I've found over the years giving the customer all the viable options the best course.

So on this case
1. Stops off and cut bolt. Make good paint.
2. Try to drill out Internals then make good door before painting.

3. Kick door in. Repair frame and repaint.


All of a sudden option 1 looks like a very good option.

I assume the hinge is not accessable on your side. If it were you could cut the hinge and slide the door out?

99% of the time Internal room doors open inwards.

I'd assumed this was the case as it wasnt stated to be otherwise.

Like a neighbour I had, he told me he had fitted a new rimlatch lock and needed to use a key to close it then it wouldn't stay shut, I had a look, took the cover off the lock so I could turn the tongue over so it worked the right way. The packaging even told it was a universal lock that may need the tongue turning over, but who reads instructions
