Picked this up today, FOC, with my hand shaper...

It's obviously a jig of some type.
The back and forth movement (with what appears to be a nylon follower) has a stop and a micro adjust, whereas the up/down and side to side movement has no limits/stops - unless they've been removed? pen for scale.

Bit elaborate just to hold a pen, probably a mug stand with a levelling function so your brew doesn't spill ?

Is it out of some sort of optical doodad and the movement it to focus/enlarge the image? I'd put a TV remote on it, but each to their own.

As the arms at the bottom get screwed to your desk and then the linear bearings allow you to position the pen exactly where you need it

Looks like some sort of research lab equipment. It may have gone through several revisions and improvements. Looking at the corrosion, it may have spent its time in some sort of chemical fume cabinet.

As tempting as that might be, I have a use for the slides, so it'll be stripped down and repurposed.
