Any idea what Vice this is?

Thanks, the makers name is too faded, even got the magnifying glass on it with no luck.

Try tranfering it to paper, by rubbing over it with a soft pencil

Or even photograph it straight on and mess around with photoshop or something, it's surprising what can be gleaned from apparently illegible photos.

Certainly a nice solid vise,Try using a hand wire brush on the logo, It might remove some of the dirt and grime to make the casting more legible,

Thanks for the suggestions, I'll give them a go. Looks the vice has been in that spot for years. I just bought the place and got the contents of the workshop thrown in as long as I cleared the rest of the house. The previous owner was in his 80's and told me he's had it for over 50 years. Also snagged a couple of Dawn vices inc a nice big offset.

Yes, I was taught the back jaw should be level with the front of the bench.

Thanks for the suggestions so far...So it looks like a Parkinson but I can't see any numbers on it. The measurements are W230mm - H335mm - L700mm, Jaw opens to 250mm.

It is an old Parkinson. That was their first design/style of vice. They didn't put model numbers on those; The jaw width denotes the model. What width are the jaws, in inches? Looking at the size in the photo's, I'm guessing that may possibly be around an 8A or 9. Late Victorian period was when those vices were produced, so treat it well.

The 8A is a 6" vice, so that's at least in the 9* camp. With their really old ones like you have though, the numbering system didn't really apply, at first. They made some monsters in that design. There's a photo on Gracesguide from a Victorian show, if I recall correctly, and some visible in that photo were huge.

Same here, in that my favourites are the Parkinsons. I have some nice vices of other manufacture mind, but they still remain my favourite, especially the older ones like above.
