Any experience of electric strike plate?

Hi guys,

Has anyone fitted an electric strike plate to external metal gates.
There seem to be hundreds of them out there.
All sorts of prices and specs.
We need it for a card access system for our new premises for our makerspace.
The landlord has a set of metal gates at the entrance to the site.
Were building the card access system for our benefit and the other tenants.
We are going to modify the gate, cut and weld as neccesary to fit the strike plate.

Our requirements for the strike plate.
Exterior
Fale secure
Monitored
Self closing gate can slam shut.

Its the self closing im failing on.
We have an existing mortice lock that has to be opened by key.
We want the gate to slam closed without having to actuate the strike plate.
So the bit in the strike plate needs to move to let the bolt to pass into the plate.
I cant find a strike plate that allows that.
any advice appreciated.

look at the door systems on council flats. Can only open the main door when buzzed or have a fib but door will slam shut on its own

I dont think they will take kindly to me borrowing one.
I expect they also fail safe in the advent of power failure or fire.
So people can escape.
I dont know of anr round here that i could look at.

you would think but when I lived in the flat we had a total power cut and the guy below me ended up kicking the door off its hinges to get out as it remained locked

Normally a mag lock would hold the door/gate shut, in the event of a power failure it would open, and I'm guessing you'd have to have a press pad inside the building, stopping someone jumping the gates and letting his mates in....and having a standard door closer to shut the gate/ door Or am I missing something?

you need the standard electronic strike plate that allows remote opening of the gate but a lock with the same type of locking bolt a a yale latch where it can retract and pass the strike plate to close

oh, forgot in my last post. was talking to my missus grandfather earlier, he works on a private estate with gates. the way they do theirs is with a mag lock as dr nik said, a motor to open the gate when the mag rele

Simple really you'll be wanting a dictator on the gate http://dictatordirect.com/ so it shuts and you can adjust the closing speed to work well.

Then an electric strike lock we often fit Asec as they are very good value, but I cant think if they do a weather resistant one. I know Trimec do though, just avoid Assa as they are very expensive for what they are, monitored is not a problem as if fail locked. You be wanting a psu for the strike normally 12 or 24vdc and has a battery backup in, maybe have a look at locksonline. I know some of our suppliers wont sell unless you have a trade account with them

The card reader will just have a relay output that you use to run power into the strike from the psu to make it release..

The only other thing to consider is that if it's a fire escape route the secure side will need a break glass, kind makes it easy to jump over the wall and release though. Unless you run it off the fire relay so it lets it open if the alarm goes off.

Or if you don't want a card reader you could go down the keypad route, Act 5 is cheap and easy to fit for example. But the Act10 has a monitored output, both allow up to 10 users code which can be added or removed with a master code. So if it's shared you can restrict access if you need too.

Have seen spring loaded striker plates allows door to close, but requires mortise to be operated to open

No electric closer or opener needed. The gates are to stay manually opening and closing.
We just wanted the mortice bolt to be able to lock into the strike plate without having to hold the strike plate open.
Seems these dont exist so its back to the drawing board.

Ive spoken to a locksmith today and he reckons the electric strike plates are not robust enough for our usage and exposure to the elements.
He recomended exterior magnets as the most reliable option.

This means we loose the advantage of allowing the existing other tenants to be able to carry on using
there keys till they register there cards for the rfid system.
