Any dog owners on the forum

Bit of a daft question because I already know the answer but looking for a bit of advice.
My 14 year old Staffordshire bull terrier although still fairly fit refuses to go walking any distance (arthritis in rear legs) & as a result her claws (which never needed cutting when she was younger & walking) are now in need of trimming.
I bought some shear type trimmers but they proved utterly useless & broke because the nails were too tough.
Anybody recommend some heavy duty trimmers which will do the job (preferably quickly as she doesn’t like being messed about)

we had a kennels in the old days and was always doing the grooming.......

Yeah we’ve been through a lot of variations Ron and we use and rate this type now. Just an eBay or Amazon special but it’s the bypass jaw style and the depth stop that makes them so good. This is a small sized set but a medium would be perfect for staffie size.

you can get hold of them one handed fit around dog claw and snip while holding paw with other hand

hates the back claws been done front claws not a problem back ones are fun with a squirming fighting dog

The type in eschen's post work well, your local vets probably stock them or easy enough to find online.
Be carefull with using side cutters and that sort of thing as squeezing from both sides can curl the nail and split it and that can cause nasty problems.

A sanding drum in a dremel also works well just dont let it build up too much heat.

my dog lets you cut his nails and sand them by hand as long as he is sat in the chair and you give him gravy bones. he don't like the electric sanding drum though

our old dog had a bit of stiffness, the vet told me to give him half a paracetamol on a morning and again later in the evening,
as good as anything he would sell me,
a couple of days he was trotting about like a pup,
I always trim our dogs nails, they dont walk much on hard surfaces,

Be careful of the quick - as the claws get longer so does the quick.
Supplements often help arthritis.

I was just typing that as we found that with our old terrier, if they were left to long then even if you cut a sensible amount it would end up bleeding on the odd one. We found little and often was best. She had black claws which made it difficult to tell where the quick was.

When I was around 14 I took my Cocker spaniel to the vets to have her claws trimmed - the f****** vet cut through nearly every quick. Blood everywhere and the poor dog let go the rear end she was in agony.
If it happened these days I would knock the git out

I have that sort for ours, haven't raised the courage yet to do his front dew claws as he's a little wary! Check out Wilkos, a lot cheaper than the vets.

I might try that, I give her Glucosamine but not totally effective.

what do you feed him?

my parents oldest German Shepard is 13 now, he had hip dysplasia when they got him as a rescue at 2yrs old, a couple of years back he couldn't get jump back in the van after a walk and started to struggle getting up the ramp my dad made, started to struggle getting up from lying on the floor etc... we were all thinking the same thing - he didn't have long left :-(

but... then they started feeding him tripe+salmon mix - mostly because I'd just started getting salmon in at work.... within a couple of weeks he was like a different dog - or like he was a few years ago I should say.... it's been about two years now and he's back to jumping up and running around when people come over, he needs the ramp to get back in the van after a walk, but it has been 2 years so that's pretty good going!

happy to send you some freebies to try, you'll just need somewhere to keep it (frozen) - if you want to keep it in your normal food freezer you're going to need a sealed container for it because it's a bit smelly :-o
