Any Detectorists On Here ?.

Just wondering if there are any detectorists on here who enjoy the hobby like myself ?. Havent found much lately , grounds a bit hard and its a bit hot at the minute !. Anyone else had any luck ?. Programme on More 4 tonight at 9 about the Roman fort at Calstock if anyones interested , cheers.

I go out every now and then. The field behind my house is the old town dump. Found coins, most unidentifiable except for one silver six pence.

Yes, lucky to live on a farm in Roman Norfolk. Just lost my last field to crop but more should become available in the next month or so.

I'm not a detectorist but the series " the detectorists" is one of the funniest and well written series I've ever seen. I've watched the series over and over. Much to my wife's annoyance, she just doesn't get it!

My only use of one was when Mrs Robo lost 3 gold rings off one hand into the shavings in the stable. A friend lent her one, not sure of the model but we found all 3 rings in less than 30 minutes

You'll probably find everyone has their favourite brand - mine is Minelab, you kind of get used to feel and sound and features.

You actually won't find much difference in depth capability between the brands and price ranges - OK the very cheap ones will be limited but mid range and up will be similar. Depth is very much dependant on size of target and you'll typically be digging no further down than a foot. Small cut silver halfpennies (below) within a few inches of the surface, seal matrices (below) 12" or so.

Where the more expensive machines tend to perform is discrimination - the ability to determine different target types/materials. You generally don't want to spend time digging iron - lots of rusty nails and bits of tractor/trailer, top of the range machines will be able to locate a good find next to iron.

Of course you need land to search, that land needs to have targets and time needs to be invested - Not too different from fishing

I use to go metal detecting on the beach's local to me in California. Haven't done any detecting here in the UK, but still have the Garrett.
Never found anything worth noting, but occasionally just enough money (coins) to buy a new set of batteries.

My brother lives in Stonnall , owns a detector but never uses it . Right opposite him is a huge flat field too !!.

We have a few local guys that like to do it, a few finds from our hay field, no idea if they pocketed the gold sovereigns though!
A Robinson Cutler from Oxford overstamped coin from the late 1700s, a George 1st farthing from 1719-1722, a 1932 half penny and a wind up thingy from a Brevete clock, none of it worth much though
They couldnt find the bunch of house keys Mrs Blobber lost in a strop one day though!

What I would like to search is our front garden, it did have this old mud & stud cottage on it and you can still feel lots of floor/rubble/debris if you poke about under the grass, our house is the one in the back right of the picture
