That is fine until you drop one on hard obstacle and get a small crack in the structure.

I'm leaning more towards cyclocross it dose look like the way to go. I think I need to ride one and see how I get on with the drop bars.

I reckon either a cross bike or a proper tourer. Cross bike seems cooler but a tourer is made for the job.

Don't even think about a aluminium frame bike without carbon fibre forks, it will be very harsh to ride.
Steel frame bike are fine with steel forks though, the steel has a fair bit of flex in it.
On another note relatively speaking it's only in the last few years that carbon fibre frames are really lighter than aluminium. The biggest real advantage is the true aero designs possible and the not so harsh ride that a carbon fibre frame gives. My 2001 road bikes aluminium frame weighs 1000g and there are a lot of carbon fibre frames even now which weigh more.

Octoo doodah I already have one of those.
For riding pushbikes on the road I would go for a nice steel frame if you can still get them.
My antique Kona Kileauea looks like pond life but still rides nicely.

I also installed a nice pair of rockshox forks on it.
Agreed about the harshness of aluminium forks, but not sure about the "instantaneous failure mode" of CF
The main thing about comfort on longish commutes - long wheel base, slick tyres, front suspension.
If you don't like the handlebars, change them! I prefer straight handlebars with "horns" on the end.
The more variation in hand position, the more comfortable you will be.
I realise that you're only talking a 30(?) mile commute per day, not 700+ miles in a week like I used to do!
As to the weight - I doubt a few grammes are going to make *that* much difference - certainly not as much as a decent set of high pressure tyres.

So I have decided it’s time to get back on a bicycle. Not an issue apart from my very dodgy knee. Extremely limited range of movement, and therefore I am considering a pendulum crank setup.
