I have a mosa generator with a honda engine. The engine is working perfectly but I have no power output from the generator. Any ideas as to what might be wrong with it?
Try to get at the cable ends and check continuity with a multimeter, then start the slow process of checking all the components from one end to the other
Might be a damaged cable or connector...
Worse case scenario the windings on the altenator have gone , shouldn't be too much though to have an engineering shop rewind it
I'm sure they'll be glad for the work
I'm not able to quote prices unfortunately, it entirely depends on the parts and work that needs doing
If you can work out that its a component issue that should be fairly easy, a trip to Maplin perchance...
If the altenator needs rewinding that may cost quite a bit more, it depends on what you can afford to spend
One thing to check is for a "centrifugal clutch" , it'll be on the drive axle between the engine and the altenator, try to get it so you can see it when it's running.
Try to see if the actual altenator is turning at the same time as the engine...
Could just be that the clutch has gone, they're fairly cheap...
On the other hand it might just need a good squirt of WD40 if it's seized
Let us know how you get on with it.
Try checking the clutch first, that gives me "issues" from time to time...
Also have a look on the top of the engine near the pull start if it has one, there should be a small lever connected on one side to the carb and a spring on the other, when it's running give it a gentle press in the direction the spring pulls and it should "rev"
Other than that it's down to testing with a multimeter, find a cheap one that can do voltages up to 240V and current up to about 10A or 20A if you can find one. Also check it can test "continuity", should have a small beeper for that
Test all the cables then the components starting from the altenator to the supply points, might just be a dodgy connector were waters got in or it's come loose
Cheers!
Work commitments mean I wont get a chance to have another look at it till at least thursday but I will let you know how I get on. I had been using the genny for some grinding then struck an arc with the rod and it just stopped working.
Thanks again for the advice.
