Any advice for a beginner?

I am seriously interested in DIY welding, to make custom railings & gates for a new-build project.

Can anyone recommend a suitable welding kit (make / model) for mild steel railings and for attaching ornate metalwork?

A "welder" friend advised me to look at MIG welders, and I may be able to get some initial tuition from him, but would be grateful for any additional advice or points of view from the Forum.

The best thing you can do is pm weldequip. he will recommend the best options for what you want to do. Once you have your kit keep us posted with what your doing and we'll help you iron out the details to get the best welds pos.

Look for something with at least 180 amps for stuff like that, it won't come cheap but it will hopefully pay for itself through other jobs. Weldequip sells Portamig and Clarke among others and DIY welding is a Butters agent. Having bought stuff off both I can't fault either .
