Anvil in Essex

Is it me or are second hand anvils selling at ridiculous prices on Fleabay and freeads? I have chucked in some bids on some shocking anvils that are in such bad condition they probably are only good for scrap. Well every time I bid or ask about them they are either already gone or sell at £130+ I know of a few people who have bought them for £20 - £50 max. Does anyone have one near to Essex or know where I could get one - I'm interested in doing bit of blacksmith work for fun...

Good luck, you won't get a decent anvil for less than £150 and then it'll be a small one!

My local scrappie had one with the beak smashed off and still wanted £50 for it, they are all the rage for garden décor and as you have found out fetch a lot of money.

Only chance of getting a cheap one is if the owner does not know it's true worth.

Join a local blacksmiths guild, our guild has a stock of used anvils etc donated or bequeathed by blacksmiths and loaned or sold for sensible prices to budding blacksmiths.

There was a belter on Homeworkshop a week past Sunday, £70. I might be wrong in guessing it may be sold, but one way to find out.

mate of mine is an architectural salvage dealer and had three anvils in his yard, with the silly prices he was asking they didn't sell. I needed one to have a go at blacksmithing so acquired said anvil for no cost, just need to give it back to him if and when he sells the other two

Just seen this too, I may be able to get hold of another section of railway track, but will need someone who can mill the top flat

eBay isn't a good place to buy anvils or any blacksmithing tools for that matter, the prices just go silly.

Put your nose to the ground to see if any farmers/old workshops and the like have one taking up space. Farm machinery auctions, tool auctions & scrap yards are definitely worth a look too.

Don't be put off by an anvil that has a few chips & dings, you'll find nice spots on it to do your work & as long as you've got a flat area of about 4inches square then you're golden.

If you find an anvil that has a nice flat face but some ragged edges, just make a tool with some decent edges to drop down into the hardy hole.

My first anvil was a chunk of RSJ. Stick a magnet on the underside to reduce the noise and you're off.

Bought an anvil. £120 pretty flat with a nice ring and good edges. Really pleased with it - however I had to drive for 4 hours in total to collect it and bring it back. Thanks for all the good info.

Aquired my anvil from a mate who is a salvage dealer. He's got three for sale in his yard, been sitting around for about 5 years. It mine to use until it's sold. Or mine to keep if he sells the yard. So can't really complain
