I know some of you are going to question my wisdom here but I really am at a loss to know what "gun wire" is, but if I had any, I would be able to measure it the question is, what is this, apart from the obvious:

Gun wire was used for breech reinforcement of built-up guns, Invented by the French in the mid 1800's, some of the guns in the forts around Verdun (before they were taken out to be used elsewhere) used it.
British Naval guns began to be manufactured using it also around the same time in Liverpool so possibly the wire works in Manchester were suppliers?

Think post 5 above is probably correct, one of a set of go/no go gauges to measure the wire in question. Whitworths had a history in gun manufacture.

Isn't that 'gin' a contraction of 'engine'? Similar to cotton gin, that's not brewed and distilled cotton.

Wire was wrapped around the rifled liner of battleship guns. Rectangular wire, wound under constant tension. Kilometers of wire.

The forts of the Maginot Line and their guns are no match.

The forts around Verdun pre-date the Maginot line by about 35 years. they had 75mm & 155mm built-up guns installed amongst others. British Naval six-inch guns were wire wound and sleeved in the late 1800's
It's not about a 'match' it's about the technology used.

Okay, a few of you were very close, it is a gauge for gun wire for artillery. The "wire" is a it of a misnomer as its actually more like wire ribbon. It usually came in a width of .25 inches and .06 inches thick. It was used as a building technique for the 13-Pounder of the Royal Horse Artillery all the way up to the 15-inch Mk I of the superdreadnoughts. For scale the 12-Inch 50 cal guns ca 1908 had 117 miles of wiring wound around the "A" tube, giving it strength as well as an incredible ability to withstand a detonation of the shell in the barrel.

So yes, I bit like the "Gin " in a gin trap.
