another what am i doing wrong thread

hi all i am trying to weld my campervan but having trouble migging
i have praticed on old bit of wing and new metal
i am using a clark 100e bottle of gas (i think its argon co2 mix i got it years ago when i tried migging then but had welder nicked )
i have tried diffrent presure settings in psi 20 10 5 2 & 0 and diffrent wire speeds i have also used my oxy bottle to see if theres any diffrence in the weld looks like arc weld slag when i tap it with the hammer just falls off the welds also have cracks in them prior to hitting with hammer the wire is 06 i assume as its in the small grove on wheel any help much apreaceated

Are you sure that is gas MIG wire? Gasless will have lag like you say. Should have a copper coating for gas wire.

Also the numbers on the roller are backwards from what you would expect. 0.6 showing will have the 0.8 groove under the wire.

thanks for reply i think my problem is i am getting confused with my gas i think i am using oxygen not argon i thought i had a bottle filled with argon shield years ago when i had a mig but now i am not sure this might explain why i could only blow holes then and now i assume its getting to hot welds have cracks in them prior to chipping them off with hammer i am waiting for to get some argon to see how that goes have to stick with oxy acc till then but me pannels will warp with the heat

I`ve got a feeling you could be right in that your using oxygen, the bottle has a black top, and i think thats an "oxidising" label on it. Argoshield is a green top, blue bottle. Could have been not so pretty if there was grease in the torch valve or inside the machine.

got me some gas

had my old bottle pressure tested and filled with argonsheild my welds look a lot better now blew some holes but filled them in to see if i can on some spare metal but its a fine line between practicing and trying to get back on road http://fordtransit.org/forum/viewtopic.php?f=15&t=43530

blooming hell!!! getting o2, co2 or argon mixed up is potentialy lethal.
ive seen the results from a chap who had oily hands when he set up his oxyacetlyne gear. not nice, his hands looked black cornflakes had been stuck to them.
think i,ll stick to arc welding.

done a bit of welding now i have gas and sunshine for hr or two wish the neighbors would stop saying hello and talking to me every 5 mins slows me down too much last pic in thread is using gas welding done that while waiting for argon first two using clarke 100 mig have to learn as i am going along
wire speed 5 switch on 1 max gas about 10/20 boc single gauge tried on min first got better weld on max setting so welded over bit of first weld

Welding over a weld might make it look better but I doubt it will make any difference to the integrity of the weld.
Think about it, say you're laying a 2mm high bead on 1mm steel so you now have 3mm to penetrate.

thanks for your reply i upped the amps when i welded over the bit of weld i done first and it seamed to melt the original weld i got under neath afterward to see if it penetrated and it had

Clean up the metal a bit more before welding. In some places i can see you have welded through paint. Do you have an angle grinder?

stopping rust

i have a grinder poss just trying to rush cause it was getting dark .now i done a bit of welding whats best to put on it to stop it rusting to much before i get to Finish it off its already started to rust on the weld going down on right hand side i put a bit of primer on it but think its no good would i be better to put red oxide or bit gloss on it

You would be better off sealing it from the elements right after you have completed the panel rather than doing a temporary mash up. Primer is porous.

I slap some Zinc 182 on after welding, you can paint over it later with your top coat. That looks as good as you'll get at a lot of places that charge money for the job so keep it up and you'll soon have all the holes filled.

Welds in top pic, taaaaack stop, taaaaack stop, tasaaaack etc are ok but cutting the overlap a little, bit less voltage or could try bit less/more WFS. Not at all bad tho
