Another vice thread - forged steel

Anyone had experience of forged steel vices that are induction hardened?

Main question is many of them don't have replaceable jaws, is that a problem? I assume it isn't a issue with these types of vices or why would they do it.

must be a crap vice if it does'nt have removable jaw's.....look out for a decent "Record" vice....they'll last a life time.......can be a bit pricey tho.....got my last 1 from a boot sale........frank

Not at all. Some Heuer vices, for example, don't have replaceable jaw inserts.

When was the last time you saw knackered inserts on an old vice, unless it had been abused? Wear is going to be a nonexistent issue unless you're beasting it. Besides, you can easily make aluminium, iron or copper covers, if you wish.

That's right, stuff like bessey industrial bench vice range, Gedore, Beta and loads more - all forged steel, all made in Europe, all industrial class.

I mean you can get forged steel ones with replaceable jaws but I'm struggling to find anything bad on the ones that don't have replaceable jaws, no-one seems to complain.

Looking at those Heuer ones the price isn't bad for forged steel.

I might still get a second hand old English one but I'm a bit time poor at the minute.

True and like you say I will be making soft jaws. They should take a fare hammering though, basically they are anvil forge steel.

I have a old English one here, and it super heavy duty. Trouble is that even has cracks in (I didn't notice when I got it). Came from lorry repair shop from a guy in his mid 70's. Perhaps I should have know it had major abuse being used in a lorry repair shop.
