another newbie

Hi This is my first of many questions so be gentle if thay have been asked before??. I want to do some welding on the body of my T25 Transporter and I have a good supply of Galvanized sheet metal what will be the problems with welding it apart from removing the galvanize from the parts to be welded.
I am welding with a SIP Migmate 130 gasless.

Hello there! and welcome!
Ah, welding galv...i think you should try and search the forum for that, you'll find a lot of threads on that subject!
But be carefull with it it's very poisonous! And it will make you very sick if you'd breathe in the galv fumes! (flu-like symptoms)

Hi Sparkey Many thanks for the welcome, also thanks for the warning I think I may have got it a bit wrong it's not a dipped Gal it's got like a pattern on it,

Can you post a picture, that'd help. Could be checker plate you've got, not the best for outer wings unless you want to make a feature of it?

Hi Jaeger S2K, Sorry have not got back to you have been away, Have not got a digi camara still life in my old nikon, the pattern is a smooth finish as if its been painted or rolled on, I had a go wire brushed the sirface and managed to do ish ok, but still would like to know what it is??.

Hi hobopatch, does the pattern look like this photo, If so its large spangle galvanised, quite common, the patten or spangle size depends partly on the rate of cooling after coating, you'll find more information halfway down this page.

Hi Tig Paul, YES YES thank you very much that is just what it is like.
Once I've cleaned of the part I want to weld it works fine.

Hi Charles! good we figured that out!
Aren't you having spatter problems with the gasless mig?
Be sure to remove all the galv from the welding area tho! if you're having white flufs in the fumes it means there's still some left!
What thickness is the sheet? Have you started to weld on the van yet?

Hi Sparkey, I'v been using a mini grinder with a flapper to remove the galv, have not started to weld on the van still doing a bit of practice on bits of metal to try and get things right and so far so good with his hand on a big lump of wood??. The metal is app 0.8 or 0.9 but is just under 1 Mil.
