Another JCB loadall 527-58 fault

1995ish. Got some great help on here last time (tilt compensator ram broke), so here’s hoping…

The three position switch that selects steering: 4-wheel / 2-wheel / crabbing isn’t working.

- In 4-wheel, appropriate light comes on and steers correctly.
- 2-wheel does not engage and no light
- crab works as normal.

So it’s the middle position (2-wheel) that isn’t working. I need this to line up the wheels occasionally. Will be having a look tomorrow, but does anything obvious spring to mind? Switch itself will be first port of call.

Run independent power up to the switch from the battery.

This will be a wiring/fuse fault for sure

The newer models have a sensor that needs to be around 5mm from the large washer on the track rod inner joint.

If its working in 4ws and crabs ok it wont be the hydraulic steering mode valve, switch would be my go to also.
Identifying what does what at the switch end without a wiring diagram will be a challenge.

The switches are prone to failing. We had one fail when at full crab left... Made a great roadblock till we got a new switch in it!

Sorted!

The selector switch is a rotary type, and seemed to have three different ‘states’ so I discounted that. All wiring beeped out ok to the steering mode relay box.

There are two Hall sensors underneath, looking at the front and rear track rods, sensing when the wheels are straight. Rear one had a busted wire right at the connector, so I extracted the pin and soldered a new wire on.

Both sensors light up when triggered (by proximity of metal) so you can see if they’re working or not.
