Another engine build...M9R 2.0L

Another build passing through my workshop...one of my sub-contractors who does a lot of work for me was a bit hard on his Renault trafic 2010. Has a young family and money is tight so i am building his motor and he can do a few days for me when his end gets better. full rebuild,mains, rods, .50 over on the holes (hard hone), pistons, head cleaned and lightly scraped, and a new core in the turbo (genuine Melett). Couple of hours every afternoon should see it done for next weekend.

Have a similar job waiting in my loading bay for the past few months... M9T on my 2014 Master.

Given the insane cost of new vans these days, it's likely I'll motivate myself to pull the block out of my existing van for a rebuild before I can afford a new van.

New or used vans are proper money at the moment.

Where do you buy the parts from, Genuine Renault or pattern?
I've seen kits on eBay for full engine rebuilds.

pattern mate..but use a reputable motor factors (NOT EURO PARTS) so they are willing to put there name behind brands

@Nomad should look at this - I think he has an old Renault engine that needs a rebuild. Not an easy job but maybe an older engine than this?

May be my peepers playing tricks but that block deck looks like it would benefit from a light skim.

Nice work, I’m watching with interest

I’m trying to do a low budget rebuild on a much earlier 2.1D motor but it’s not going well. Hopefully things will move forward at the weekend. Some background about my pet project

Is anyone familiar with rebuilding late 1980s Renault 2.1D engines (engine code 852 not the more common J8S ) I do a lot of work on older engines (1960s-1990s) and often remove the head & sump from tired engines so I can push the piston/conrod up & out, inspect things then refit with new...

It is actually dead flat across all corners and thankfully so because it must have been decked in its past life and i am on the limit for piston protrusion with the thicker head gasket.

Sorry for the boring pics but there does seem to be a few of these engines in this forum and it might help others..Anyway bottom end built and sump intermediate plate and sump pan fitted..head fitted along with all the hydraulic lifters which have been soaking in oil so they don't bleed down. Injectors fitted with anti-seize and the clever design for the crankcase breather system. New timing chain fitted with a "borrowed" holding kit. few bits left tomorrow afternoon after work and its good to go. Checked the turbo out and its perfect, young lad needs to save his pennies

horrible top end design, who the hell fits the cams to the cam cover so you cant verify you haven't displaced a rocker fitting the cams.... grrrr. (that only cost me 6 hours and a day of headaches diagnosing the dead miss on number 1 cos it was holding intake 1 open..... seems to be designed intentionally to make it hard to put together.

Easily checked by rotating engine on the stand and checking compression. Very simple motor to work on to be fair.

Renault engine designs are unconventional, but they work once you get used to it. I guess its done with production machinery in mind.

They have always been on the avant guard in trying new idea, that don't quite work out, which is why they have a bad rep. Then the Japs or Germans take the idea and improve on it, and make it work better.

Most of the problems that I have found with Renault, is down to unfamiliarity, and inexperience with the brand, bodgery, and wrong lubricants.
