Another broken fence post!

I've got a fairly long run of concrete fence posts with standard type B&Q panels adjacent to some garages and some plonker has reversed into another one and snapped it at the base. I can't be arsed to keep digging them out and redoing them so, I was thinking of burying one of those metal post fixing spikes in concrete so I can just pull out the knackered ones and easily replace them, or levelling the concrete and bolting a metal post fixing down so again I can easily replace the posts.
Any thoughts or recommendations on this?

Hmm, maybe cast a large concrete block in the ground with a slightly over size hole in (polystyrene as a former?) so you can lift out and slide back in a replacement concrete post when the muppets have snapped another one.

cant you put up a low wall in front of fence say 12" high so they hit that first
or just make some steel posts up instead

Buy some Armco Barrier and fix it along the fence but slightly spaced off. It's available s/h on eBay

my gatepost is 12 inch by 12inch and 130 years old and seen a few cars off including the side of my van

no id use the broken one again and put it in front of the fence there going to hit that first before they hit your fence

what he might find out with height they sway with wind and sooner or latter will work out or even break

Replace the post with a wooden one - they will bend before breaking whereas the concrete posts are quite brittle and just snap off. Nearly every concrete post we fitted on our farm gates got broken and were replaced with old telegraph posts - have yet to break one of those!

You could also fit a piece of box section steel, definitely won't break that!

Agreed, timber posts provide good stopping power! Just last week a car fleeing police some 100m from my house overshot the T junction, careered through a fence with those wire strainers and spaces, and into one of those end-posts. Looked as though it had hit a tree, and the fence post is still there, bit bent but otherwise fine. You should see some of the fences here (God I sound sad) they're amazing, some look to go up 45 degree hills and down the other side.

All the strainers we put in are telegraph poles. There is as much in the ground as sticking up, all the stuff that came out the hole goes back in. Solid, vehicle hits it- it's the vehicle that breaks or bends!

I made up my own concrete slotted posts, got some 1/2" rebar, taped it full length with pvc tape to stop rust problems,dropped that into each one, bit time cosuming but there is a fence I will never touch again,apart from the panels of course,still have the moulds if you have the monies...Arther

Taping rebar defeats it's purpose. The layer of tape will allow the rebar to slide in the concrete, the bar is supposed to firmly bond to take the tensile load that the concrete cannot.

Rebar should be minimum 45 mm below the surface then it won't rust as the alkaline nature of the concrete stops it.

my concrete posts deteriorated quite badly the slots had cracked away in places and are virtually impossible to renew coz of their position ie concrete balls are under next doors drive and also they are 9-10 ft long the first gravel board is forming a earth retaining wall, as I am 1.5 ft higher than my neighbor, the second is also partially covered with earth then a 5ft panel, fence is 6ft on my side and 7.5 ft on neighbors side, so I had some galv folded to go around them tightly, slid it down the posts on either side, with help from, Mr Sledge--- the persuader, then drilled and bolted through to either side, to clamp the galv to whats left of the concrete it strengthened the odd cracked 'wobbly posts' and renewed and gave me the panel slots back at the same time.

Well the posts are still good, the idea of the bar is to support post if snapped,nothing else, the pvc tape was pulled tight so rebar pattern still fully utilised,and bar was placed using the proper plastic spacer/support,central in each post. they wont be going anywhere in my lifetime.Arther

I used to live in a house with a shared access drive, the property and the fence was mine but I was obliged to give 2 neighbours access, over a period of a few months one of their visitors knocked the same low fence post over 4 times, when I spoke to him about it he just laughed and said that's Cortina 4 fence 0 then,
So I concreted a length of 100 x 100 box section into the ground by about 30" or so and level with the ground as a socket, then slipped a 90 x 90 x 8 post in, painted it brown to match the rest job done,
Some weeks later he hit it again, this time he had a bent bumper smashed rear light and a crumpled rear quarter, I laughed and said that'll be post one, cortina nil then. after that he used to park up the road and walk in

I wish I could catch the twot that does it!
A socket in the ground sounds like what I was thinking, problem is the timber posts and sockets have a different centre than the concrete ones so the panels won't fit.
I could route out the slots I suppose but that's more work.
How much would a 6' length of 3" H section cost?

You could wrap copper bar around the base underground, hook the post up to the power and fit a glass insulator that would shatter in the event of a hit, thus turning the pole into a strong electromagnet. When you return, the culprit will be attached to the pole! (Here's hoping he doesn't have a pacemaker)

What about fixing a bit of rebar or scaffold tube along the fence , like a handrail .
6" stand off and a bit higher than the average bumper .
Should do the lights before your fence .
