Another boring motor question for the leccy guys...

Hi, I need to know if I can run this motor via a dimmer / variable jobber / speed control, and if so, how?

1 phase, 220v, 1.1A, 0.21 kw.

It has a starter capacitor, and the plate says 8 micro F.

Now the interesting bit - it has 4 wires. U1 V1 and W1 (plus earth).

Live goes to U1. Neutral to V1. Capacitor wired between V1 and W1. Plate states swap N between V1 and W1 to reverse direction.

Any clues?

No, those are fixed speed motors. There are supposedly VFD modules to drive them but i have not seen any.

A light dimmer will just vary the torque. I may slow down but will dissipate much more heat than normal and the dimmer will likely be unstable.

Is that not a 3ph motor? If so I can put you in touch with a Co, for a cheap (£25) VFD

Aw balls. Thats just typical. I suppose I'll just have to pony up for the 'proper job' instead... Just found it on the shelf and thought - aha!

Shox - its defo a single phase, says so on the plate.

I might investigate running the impellor off a shaft first though - so if I wanted a cheap single phase motor that I could control the speed of (about 0.2kw), what sort of thing would I be looking for?

Needs to be continuously rated (will run all day), and probably a bit bigger than that?

Washer/dryer motors will likely be the same type of motor.

Treadmill motors are DC and work well. I just used on in a drill press.

Ok, thanks for your inputs guys. I have decided to just do it once and do it properly. the real thing isn't going to break the bank, and at least I know its just right & guaranteed.
