We have a Menvier TS500 wired alarm that was in the house when we moved in over 25 years ago and it looked dated then. No one wants to work on it and I've had to fault find myself as a result. I've replaced the battery a couple of times but still had some random triggers that are becoming more often, the last one whilst we were away last week. The good thing about these old systems is the siren is bloody loud and goes on for a good while too but unfortunately the neighbours don't appreciate that quality whilst I'm away. An elderly neighbour holds our key and managed to disarm it before it decided to randomly pop off again whilst disarmed. this was repeated a few times and in the early hours of the morning via a very poor internet connection to WhatsApp I was able to guide him through disarming and powering down the system so that it couldn't go off again.
It's now time to replace and upgrade the alarm that currently has 4 PIRs downstairs, 2 door contact, a knock sensor on the patio doors and key to turn off the alarm to the stand alone garage that also has a door contact and internal siren.
After spending a large part of my holiday in Scotland looking at alarm system and reading the recent post by @JOEPRO and others who commented I've decided to go for a Texecom Premier Elite 64-W (wireless) kit-1002 that comprises:
To complement the above I have also ordered as part of additional upgrades:
The plan is the wired D20 PIR's (using the 4 wired zones) will be fitted in the downstairs rooms and hallway, Micro door contacts the front and rear door with the Impaq shock sensor on the patio doors. This covers what was already covered in the house. I will also place P15 wireless PIR sensor at the landing and another in the back bedroom that I use as my office, I've often worried about this as the patio doors below it are part of a bay window with a roof above it that can used as platform to the window into the back bedroom and it's contents. The keypad will be located in the hallway with the front and rear doors set as exits on a count down timer that sets the alarm. We can only currently use the front door to exit even though the back door is used to take the dog on the field as the driveway gates are locked from the inside.
This will all be treated as a single area and don't envisage part area arming in the house due to large dog that roams the house and exceeds the PIR's minimum sensitivity for pet settings.
The garage is fed by an 8 core cable that is split off to door contacts on the up and over and side door, long since permanently screwed shut, and the internal sounder. The panel will be connected to the 8XP Zone Expander that requires 4 cores to connect for all sensors in the garage that will be wired. As the existing 8 core cable is buried along with the power cables under a concreted driveway I will reuse it but double up on the connections. The new sealed door wired contact, internal sounder will then be run from the expander. At a later date I will add an external PIR in the garage and also connect the another door contact for the shed next to the garage.
This will all be treated as a separate area so it can be armed whilst the house is disarmed.
From my understanding the users can be assigned access to areas with individual codes. These users can also have RFID tag assigned to them too doing away with the need to enter a code so I could have tag on the house keys to disarm the house but leave the garage alarmed. Another tag on the garage keys could then disarm the alarm to that area.
The system will be connected to their mobile app or PC using the Connect Smartcom to monitor along with the facility to arm and disarm so no need to rely on neighbour if I'm away. I didn't go with the 4g version as the router already has 4g backup.
I'm in two minds over the external sounder/ bell box. I will fit the wireless that comes with the kit but will keep the existing wiring in place if I decide at a later date to go wired instead.
Thank you if you managed to ready all that and if you can see any issues with the plan or improvements please let me know.
