Anodizing

Is it possible to anodize Steel..

Been looking at this website.. http://astro.neutral.org/anodise.shtml
for some ideas on the process.. All it says is that steel is harder, does that mean more acid, longer in the tank, more power or its not possible...

You cant do it as far as i am aware, when you anodise aluminium you are colouring the oxide layer on the component and that protects the piece from further corrosion and provides a harder more resiliant surface to knocks and dents. With steel if you oxidise it you create RUST and as far as i know there is no other way around it. If you want your steel to look good and be protected you can always go down the routes of chrome, polished, painted etc etc.

Simple answer is a big no.

The only things allowed in to a sulphuric bath are lead, aluminium and titanium, nothing else or it will fizz.
Only certain grades of aluminium will anodise as well and types that will but wont come out good if at all. Castings usually a no as well due to the silicon content.

Never mastered anodising really hit and miss, problem is the electrical contacts oxidising.

Havent done any for years after the 4ft fish tank broke and gallons of 21% sulphuric rushed out. Rotted steel garage door in no time and was washed away.
Looks like a recent link that one, all the others tell porkies or leave out relevant info.

Steels totally different process though nickel plating is similar.
