I'm sure most of you more experienced metal workers will be aware of this technique, but it may be of use to some.

yes, similar method I prefer is to brush some washing up liquid on the ally and heat it from behind if possible and when the washing up liquid turns dark you are done

He made a bit of a meal of that, rub half a bar of soap into the sheet and then heat the soap directly

Personally i prefer a permanent marker or soot from say an acetylene flame. Both burn off at approx the right temp so no need to clean off the charred mess that used to be soap. Permanent markers like soap are best not heated directly and all three are only approximate i.e. the specific* annealing temp varies with flavour of ally and while all of them are noticably softened the heat treatable alloys need to be held at a specific temp for upto several hours to fully anneal from T6 temper


* typcially 343°C for 1xxx and 5xxx series while 2xxx, 3xxx and 6xxx are 413°C. 7xxx can be either depending on exact flavour [/pedantic] Tempilstiks are temperature indicating crayons that melt (mark) at specific temperatures

why do modern mobilephone cameras have such a narrow field of view ?? i hate watching videos made with these.

it's because of the lens and detector configuration together with the native screen. The new hd ones are 16:9 but some of the older ones are a "wider" format. Turn this 90 degrees and its extremely narrow

I use the acetylene flame/marker pen method too.
