My interpretation of a well known piece of art...decided the garden needed a touch of class

'She' is busy rusting at the moment before getting a coat of protective varnish.

She's not as big as she looks....wingspan is just 1.6 metres...but I would like to build a bigger one now!!! No...she doesn't fly....think the aerodynamics may need more work.....

-when you say wingspan, that's usually wingtip to wingtip - looks more like 1.6 metres per arm
Gotta be more like 3.2 metres wide and 1.2 metres high?
Was the metal free?
I'd like to make a large(ish) sculpture for my garden but without spending an arm or leg...

Thanks all for the positive and encouraging comments. The wingspan, end to end, is only 1.6 metres...it's a bit of an optical illusion that she does look much bigger! No, the steel was not free...it's just plain 2mm mild steel from the Liverpool steel stockist who keeps insisting that I pay for it.....

The original sculpture was made from (expensive) corben self-rusting steel - it forms it's own protective coating and then doesn't rust any more.

Although I have sprayed the steel with lots of salt water it doesn't seem to be rusting very well and also very unevenly...I read Chunko uses ammonium chloride...can I get that from a chemist, garden centre, or somewhere else...anyone know??

When I went on Chunkolini's sculpture course he kindly gave me some in a small plastic bag. I was just praying I wouldn't get stopped on the way home and have to explain this white powder in the small plastic bag!

I've ordered a kilo off EBAY...whats the usual ratio of water/powder for a quick rust? The base is made from 3mm cold rolled steel and doesn't seem to be rusting at all....??

Gerry, did you cut the body shapes using your CNC plasma cutter?

Hi Malvern....yes I did. Never seen the actual sculpture so spent a long time studying pics then designed all the (lots of) separate pieces on the PC and cut them out using the plasma CNC. Didn't want an exact copy so parts of it are different but the same basic ratio/scale. I've made quite a few weird and wonderful things over the years but the CNC is a magical tool that I love using more and more!!
