Good evening folks. Fantastic Forum for beginners and hobbyists I've been meaning to take up welding again for a few years for the odd hobby project. I'm a gas-man (anaesthetist) by trade, but have just acquired a very rusty Austin A35 that needs a roof transplant, hence the reawakened interest. I'm trying to get on a MIG welding course at Sparsholt College in January, but it probably won't run because there aren't enough students. Have recently finished a Chesil Speedster (Porsche 356 replica), and have an old Polo to fix up with my son (if he ever gets out of bed!).

356 Porsche speedster mmm, now thats a car, i was once lucky enough to get a drive of one, go like stink but must of had naff Beetle brakes, took me about 300m and 2 lanes to stop the bloody thing. lol

Hi Simon. Don't use the stuff much these days, it's more effective in hot-rods. Passing wind for money pays the mortgage and lets me tinker with cars. Thanks for the greeting - I used to work in Glasgow.

What's all this interest in laughing gas, ha ha! Inject it in your motor, it's more fun. Agree about the beetle brakes, even with front discs it's dodgy stopping in a hurry.

It did make the old bum go a bit :full as i was on the old a13 in Dagenham at the time, NOT GOOD!

Ha - Nitrous I used to work in sales for BOC anaesthetic gas (1980s). Went to many trade expos and the kit we had on display was fitted with real cylinders normally - amusing how many "practitioners" wanted a whiff

We routinely did theatre visits, during one of which I was happy enough to witness a the top of a guy's head being removed at SGH. Brighton was also fun as I recall - think we called the anaesthetist Mr Whiffy due to his propensity to inhale that which was intended for his patients....

Also recall a significant no of helicopter pilots amongst your profession.....nice

When we used to take a rescue ambulance to the Isle of Man for the rallies. We were told to remove the Entonox bottles overnight as a local addict had a habit of exchanging them for empties!

Doodlebug, it's not generally a good idea to stop on the old A13 in Daggers, if you're stationary too long someone will nick your wheels.

Thanks folks, anaesthetics is like MIG, there is gas (the whiffy stuff that comes in a mask with the nitrous) and gasless (when we squirt some stuff into a vein in your arm). I've been in touch with Weldequip - looks like I'm about to bust my budget for MIG gear. Hope I'm up to the task, or 'Rusty', my A35 shell, will be toast.

i broke my budget with weldequip started of going for a Clarke 160 and have ended up with a Portamig 181 should be being built as we speak can't wait
