An easy fix?

Hi guys,

I have a 'Clarke 85en' that has a slight problem concerning the wire feed mechanism. Basically, the wire was not being fed through when pressing the trigger but the motor could be heard spinning.
I removed the wire feeding mechanism and dismantled it to see if any of the gears inside were stripped but they were all intact. However, I did notice that the small brass cog that is on the shaft of the motor is not securely fixed to the motor shaft, so the shaft spins inside the cog! I was thinking of applying some glue or loctite to the shaft as to keep the cog secured to the shaft because there is no other way of securing it. Was it secured with some sort of adhesive when manufactured? Hmmmmmmm....
Before I try to fix it somehow, I thought I'd come on here and get some suggestions or tips. I don't want to damage it further so any tips would be great.

I would have thought the gear would just be a press fit on the motor spindle.
As you've got noting to lose, though a little crude, couldn't you grip the spindle with something to cut some marks into it then press the brass gear back on?

Hey,

I did actually try that. with the help of a friend we held the motor and using an angle grinder put a few tiny nicks on the spindle. When we put the cog back on it seemed quite snug and we thought we had fixed it, put it back together and initially it worked. Then, on feeding the wire through it gave way again and could hear it spinning. Doh!!
So now I'm thinking some sort of adhesive might be better???

Nicks with an angle grinder won't work, as you've found out. The spindle will still be the same overall size.
What I was thinking is that gripping the spindle in a few places with something like molegrips should put raised marks on it.

That sounds like a good idea, I'll try that. I wont be down the garage now until after christmas so I'll try it then.

Clean the shaft and cog and put some loctite bearing retainer in the cog then fit it in place and leave it to set. They are really good at holding things in place, I used some on a rear wheel bearing which had spun on the stub axle and was getting it hot.

the angle grinder approach was a little counter productive,actually removing metal where you actually needed a little more,I think Loctite high strength retainer is the one you want,It's stronger than the bearing fit.
